Gym Challenges - October saw the first of our Powerlifting challenges in the gym. Starting with the Deadlift, an impressive 155kg (5 repetition max) from Neil Taylor won the men's and 60kg from Alana Humphreys won the ladies. The over 50s men's was won by Andy Jenkins, who lifted 80kg (for 5 reps). In the cycling challenges, there was a clean sweep for Richard Dixon, who won the 1km (52 seconds), 5km (5:49 mins) and 10km (11:43 mins). Again, Alana recorded the best time in the 1km cycle for the ladies with 1:18mins and was also the joint winner for the 5km cycle with Ashley Humphreys, both recording a time of 7:42 mins. Well done to all those that entered these challenges last month.
New Gym Challenge - Starting from Monday, 9 November the next gym challenges will be a 5RM Bench Press and fastest times on the treadmill for 1km, 3km and 5km.
Nutrition Tip - Vitamin D is essential for bone strength and the control of calcium and phosphate in the body. We get most of our Vitamin D from Sunlight (UVB sunlight). In England, during the summer months, (April to October, if we are lucky!) the sun is strong enough, that about 15mins in the sun during the middle of the day will help produce enough Vitamin D (dependent upon skin colour). However, in the winter months, it is considered the sun is not strong enough and supplementation of Vitamin D could be an alternative (particularly Vit-D3).
