Greetings from Calum Callan
Cottesmore Hotel Golf & Country Club - PGA Golf Professional

Good Morning, welcome to our latest newsletter and I hope you enjoy the read.

This week we have launched  our new website and email newsletter. My team and I hope you like it. This new website and email is fully responsive in design. Irrespective what digital device you are using the content will adjust accordingly, giving a perfect display every time. This will allow you to read our weekly words of wisdom from the comfort of, for example your sofa, office or even a train.

We would love you to explore my website and investigate the tips and drills, product catalogue and interact with any features we have on the website.

Our aim is to provide you with weekly relevant golfing related content. From product reviews to coaching tips, we want to explain how my experience and skills as a PGA professional can help you get the most out of your game and ensure you make the right choices when buying golf equipment. Finally, and of course most importantly, we want to keep our customers informed of all Cottesmore activities including Health Club, Weekend Breaks, Party Nights, Golf Schools, Functions and Fun events.

In this first week we have a couple of great articles, one of which gives you the chance to WIN a dozen golf balls. Tell us what your key personal priorities are when you are looking at buying golf equipment; Is it Brand, Price or Fit? Take a look at the article below and enter the survey.

We look forward to any feedback you may have so click here to tell us what you think about our new email and website.

This involves a mixture of cardio and bodyweight exercises suitable for all levels of fitness.

So come along and get fit for summer!

Congratulations to Jake Peate in winning the Tea Cup last weekend. Arguably our number 1 junior, Jake is clearly intent on making it undisputed number 1. Playing off 9 Jake managed 42 points last Sunday to secure a 4 shot victory. A much needed lesson last week got Jake back on track to earn a much deserved victory. With Jake securing an apprenticeship with Calum for the next 2 years, we are all sure that this is the first of many victories in the season ahead.

The Spring Junior/Adult Foursomes was played last weekend and Lucy Pigram stole the limelight with a fantastic 7 shot victory. Partnered with her Dad, Trevor, 11 year old Lucy won her second Foursomes event to go along with The Summer Junior Adult Foursomes last year. Lucy also collected her 2013 Girls Order of Merit award justifying her 2012 Most Improved Pupil award.

Next event is the Easter Cup on Sunday 6th April - entries close 6pm Friday.

Here is a list of the upcoming junior events:

Are you aware of the difference between sand or soil lying on the green and sand or soil lying off the green?
On the green it is a loose impediment and can be brushed away. If the sand lies off the green it is not and thus you are not allowed to brush it away. Breach of this rule is a loss of hole in match play and a two shot penalty in stroke play! If you are unsure of any rule please feel free to pop into the shop and discuss with me. We also have rule books available free of charge

I had the recent honour of being elected the PGA in England (South) Captain in March. My first duty was on the 5th March at our annual AGM and it is a position that I will hold for the next 2 years. As Captain I will have a few extra 'outings' but this should not detract from my duties at the club. The main change that you will notice is that I may just get out onto the practice ground a little more often so that I can hold my head up on the course and not just in the committee room.

All the professional staff had an outing onto the competitive circuit in March as they all took part in the recent PGA in England (South) Tour Schools. It was myself that managed to stay in front of the Young Guns and receive my 'card' for all events. Sam and Steve's disappointment, however, have only made them more hungry to knock me of my perch!

Our next outing is in the Sussex Spring Meeting 18 hole sprint on Tuesday 15th April at Mannings Heath. Watch this space for the smiling faces and the disgruntled frowns!

Men's Section - A fabulous weekend of golf opened up on Saturday with the Junior Academy Spring Adult/Junior Foursomes won by Trevor and Lucy Pigram. It was hard to say who sported the biggest smile at the end - father or daughter. Well done to them both.
Sunday was Tea Cup day and it was another good day for younger members at Cottesmore with Jake Peate winning with a magnificent 42 points. In second place was Alex Burton with 38 points on countback from Dave Smythe. Best lady was Pauline Kirkman with Pauline also winning the nearest the pin for the ladies on the second, with Greg O'Connor nearest the pin on the 8th for the men.
Next Sunday is Hospice Cup day all proceeds from the day will go to St Catherine's Hospice - please bring along a raffle prize.

Ladies Section - The re-scheduled Hooker Hart (2 clubs and a putter) competition took place on two days last week, with the majority of players taking part on Thursday and just Jenny Frei on Saturday. It was decided as this was a 'fun' competition (i.e. not a qualifier) that there would be prizes for 1st and 2nd for bronze and silver divisions, with the trophy and memento going to the best score overall. The results were as follows:
Overall winner - Angela Whittington with 32 points
1st place in silver division - Angela Whittington
2nd place in silver division - Linda Adamson
1st place in bronze division - Meg Mitchell
2nd place in bronze divison - Fee Drew
Congratulations to all four ladies.
Unfortunately, Div.2's first match against Willingdon resulted in a 5.5-1.5 loss. Willingdon is quite a challenging course with many elevated tees and greens but an enjoyable course nonetheless. Well done to Irene Matheson and Linda Atkins who claimed the win and draw which gave us our points. The team's next match is at home to Singing Hills on Wednesday, so fingers crossed for a winning result this time.

Vet's Section
What a wonderful day in the early April sunshine for a round of golf with friends. Unfortunately there was a confusion over whether winter rules were still in operation which led to the first few groups playing summer rules and the remaining playing winter rule - meaning that the qualifier was cancelled, pleasing some I am sure, along with the Foundation Trophy event.
However, it did not stop the enjoyment of 53 members on a course that is in excellent condition for this time of year. Honourable mentions go to the 34 pointers of Graham Sinclair, Dave Marsden and Dave Abbott, and Les Irvine with 35 points. The leading bunch all had 37 points, and the winner was Tom George, followed by Peter Allanson in second and Ken Brightwell in third place.
The Foundation Trophy will now be played on the 15th April alongside the first round of the Haig trophy, playing to winter rules which will continue to be in place until the end of April.
We are playing away at Banstead on Thursday 3rd April and I am hoping for more success than we gained at East Brighton two weeks ago. The weather at least should be an improvement on the 2013 match there. We wish Trevor James and his merry band every success in the East Brighton Captain's and Committee Invitation Event, also on Thursday.
Entry forms for the Vets Open, our main charity fundraising event, on July 15th are available on the noticeboard in the locker room. It costs £26 for members and £35 for visitors. Further information from Alex Henderson or Barrie.
Next week is the first round of the Peter Morley/Harry Bacon Trophies, a medal qualifier. I hope this format will not put too many of you off golf next week, and there is a large turnout again next Tuesday.

Pure your fairway woods every time

Working on your ball striking is highly recommended so you can gain valuable extra yards with your fairway woods. You also need to know that your set up and specification are right for your own golf swing, otherwise inconsistency becomes a real problem.
