Inter-club Matches Many thanks to those of you who let me know of your interest in playing for the Vets in inter-club matches and for entering your name on the Cottesmore website for the away fixtures against East Brighton and Banstead on 11th and 15th March, as well as the scheduled home fixture against Goodwood on 24th March. We already know that the Goodwood match is cancelled and I’ll let you know the status of the other two, as soon as possible. My intention is to offer the opportunity for team selection to as many Vets as possible, who are match-fit to play. I realise that this is likely to prove more of a challenge for those of you who usually play on the 9 hole Phoenix course because you need to feel confident in maintaining your form for 18 invariably longer holes, using more than twice the number of strokes, over a much longer time period (typically 4½ hours in 4BBB inter-club matches). I’m sure that those of you who usually play on the Phoenix and wish to play in our inter-club matches, would not want to let yourselves or your teammates down. The guideline standard set in last week’s Communiqué (of playing at least three18 hole rounds of golf, ideally in one or more of the Vets’ Tuesday competitions on the Griffin, during the 3 weeks before the match date) is meant to provide you with an objective means of demonstrating that you can be considered for team selection. It is a reasonable requirement when compared with the average of two rounds per week played by the majority of CVGS team players, on an 18 hole golf course (holidays and sickness or injury accepted), in a ‘normal’ year from March to October. It is worth noting that inter-club matches are usually decided in the last 4 or 5 holes, which is when tiredness (mental and physical) often occurs. I should also add that in our inter-club matches any player wishing to use a buggy may, of course, do so (subject to availability and weather permitting). Additionally, when coming out of lockdown there is an important consideration for all golfers, that of guarding against the risk of unnecessary injury. CVGS Seniors’ Open – Tuesday, 6th July 2021 If you would like to play in this year’s Open you can now sign-up on the Cottesmore website, in the same way as you did last year for our Tuesday competitions. This year’s fees are £45.00 for non-Cottesmore players and £35.00 for Cottesmore players. The difference of £10.00 (£45.00 - £35.00) comprises the guest green fee, which is heavily subsidised by Cottesmore G&CC. For your £35.00 you will get a place in the competition plus the following: · Bacon roll and tea/coffee, on arrival; · On course refreshments; · 2-course, hot and cold buffet, plus tea/coffee, after playing. You can pay your fee of £35.00 by bank transfer to CVGS; sorting code 30-91-44, account number 00351077 (please add your name). Alternatively, you can pay by cheque, payable to CVGS, and deposit it in the Vets’ box in the pro shop when we return to playing golf. In the interim, you could also send your cheque to Alex Henderson, 17 Michell Close, Horsham, West Sussex RH12 1JT. Alex is coordinating the receipt of entry forms and cheque payments from non-Cottesmore players and has agreed to pass on any cheques he receives from CVGS Members for the Open to our Treasurer, David Abbott. Andrew Ross will provide you with more details about arrangements for our Open, in due course. Sad news
I noticed an obituary notice for one of our former members, Geoff Flores, in the local paper last week. Many of our older members will, I’m sure, remember him. Geoff joined the vets in 1995 and left for health reasons in 2010. He was well known as a keen sports fisherman and had likeminded friends in many parts of the world. Closer to home, his frequent surplus garden produces left for free pick up on Tuesdays was appreciated by many CVGS members. Erik
