News from Alex... Dear CVGS members, Three competitions were held on Tuesday, 6 October. The Phoenix Rogerson Trophy Rd 7, the Peter Morley Griffin Round 7 and the Harry Bacon Griffin Rd 7. A good turnout of CVGS members, with a total of 60 players. Medal competitions and a weather forecast that looked like we would suffer from heavy showers tend to dampen the spirits and player numbers. The weather turned out better than expected and heavy showers did not materialise until circa 14.10. Member’s Corner: New event - The President’s Trophy was scheduled for Saturday, 3 October. CVGS had entered a team. In the end, the competition was cancelled, due to adverse weather conditions. The President’s Trophy will be rescheduled. Captain’s Charity Day Silent Auction: Bids are still coming in for some of the prizes offered in the Silent Auction, which is why Dave Owen will be keeping it open for another few days. Donations to St Catherine’ Hospice: A few donations have been received since last Tuesday, so all three methods for donating will be left open until Saturday, 10 October. I will report the final total in due course. If you missed out on making a contribution, no matter how small, the following options are still available until Erik Sorensen advises otherwise. Just Giving Page - click here to donate. Any contribution is welcome, no matter how small or large. Five or ten pounds or more. Many thanks to the CVGS members for their contributions so far. If any members struggle with websites, just let Erik Sorensen know by email (Erik Sorensen sixacres.e@gmail.com) and the alternative is a bank transfer or cheque made payable to CVGS. The above were final rounds and I can now declare the overall winners. Provisional winners as Bob Imrie, CVGS handicap secretary, needs to double-check that there were no wrong entries in the Bacon/Morley competition rounds. Morley - Martin Gould (total 202), runner-up Dennis Baguley (total 209). Bacon - John Taylor (total 212 on countback), runner-up Ray Aylmore (total 212). Rogerson - Bernard Smith (total 99), runner-up John Oswin (total 102). Very well played to Martin, Dennis, John, Ray, Bernard and John Oswin. Playing consistently well in these Series competitions is always a good golf test. Take a bow. Member’s Questions: Now that we are entering the autumn/winter season what process should I follow if I decide not to turn up on Tuesday? If you are unwell or the weather conditions are looking very grim, you should look at the start sheet and, out of courtesy, advise you’re playing partners by phone that you are planning to drop out of the competition. If possible make up your mind the night before and also notify by email Bob Imrie and Graham Sinclair. To make this work, the plan is to circulate, in the next couple of weeks, an updated CVGS membership list which will contain your name, email address and telephone numbers. Please note this list should only be used for CVGS golfing matters. LV Challenge: LV challenge, on Thursday, 1 October, a very close run event. Ladies won eight and a half to seven and a half. A first for the Ladies. Congratulations to the Ladies. Interclub matches:
November: Monday, 2 November, Chipstead at home. Twelve players. John Taylor, CVGS Match Secretary is organising on behalf of Cottesmore, a mixed match versus Sweetwoods at Cottesmore (home match), on Monday, 19 October. Team selected. Future competitions - Tuesday, 13 October 2020: Please book as soon as possible. Tuesday, 13 October 20 Bernard Smith Wrinklies Trophy Remember Friday is the closing date. Friday, 16 October 20 Griffin - Cowdray Cup Stableford Qualifier Booking closes on Monday 12 Oct 15:00. This is a drawn competition with a starting time of 08.30am. Players will be sent a copy of the draw after Monday. Looking forward to seeing a good turnout of CVGS members on Tuesday, 13 October and for the Cowdray Cup on Friday, 16 October. Play safe and stay safe, Alex. Morrison CVGS Captain 2020
