Ladies' news

A message from Linda...

I was very pleased that the weather held up well for my first Thursday as Lady Captain which enabled our 9-hole Winter Aggregate to be played. Best score of the day was Mary Escott’s 18 points, so well done to her. My own score represented Captain’s golf at its worst so the least said the better, and I hope it isn’t the shape of things to come during the year.

Unfortunately, a number of our previous Winter Aggregate dates have been washed out and, at the time of writing, I don’t know what this week has in store as the relatively dry period seems to have come to an end, but fingers crossed. We have changed the rules this year with extra dates for this competition, so ladies have more opportunities to get sufficient cards in.

Next week is our coffee (and cake) morning on Tuesday, 4 February at 10am. This will take place in the restaurant area and includes a presentation from St Catherine's Hospice and a chance for ladies to peruse the various Open forms. I hope that as many of you as possible will attend.

At this time of year, Texas Scrambles seem to come thick and fast and Sunday, 1 March is our Boozers Scramble. This is organised by the Ladies section and involves a team of four - 1 lady and 3 men. If any ladies want to enter and need some men for their team, please let me know and I'll try and help you find some!

The weather was kind to us for Winter Scramble last Sunday and we managed to have 27 teams playing on a slight soggy course. I hope you all enjoyed the day.

Second place: Mike King, Phil Arber, Stephen Whittaker nett 58.3.
Third place: Steve Grouwstra, Steve Thomas, Martin Bolton-Smith nett 59.0.

I would walk 500 miles

Okay, the title is a slight exaggeration but the simple truth is that we all cover a good distance when playing a round of golf, especially those playing army golf! But, how far do we actually walk? Well, we got the calculator out to have a go at figuring it out for real.

Golf courses average between 6,500 and 6,800 yards. For argument’s sake, let’s split that down the middle at 6,650 yards, which means you would cover 3.78 miles (6.08km if you prefer) if you walked in a straight line.

However, factors such as the distance from green to tees, your ability, and how often you're searching for lost balls all come into play. So, in most cases, you can expect to walk between 50 and 70% further than the yardage length of the course!

All of this means one thing in our eyes - make sure you're wearing comfortable footwear out on the course. We have a great selection in the pro shop so come down and try on a few pairs before your next round.
