Reflections on the Year 2019 was the year when Ken Bambridge became our first nonagenarian member, still playing. Quite a landmark, or so I thought. Talking to my brother's father in law at Christmas I discovered that his club has a member aged 104 still playing, who was turning out for the team into his nineties. So if we are going to get competitive about this we are going to need to stay a lot fitter for a lot longer than we thought! The year also witnessed three new trophies being donated. The Lionel Shipton and two Bernard Smith Trophies for the Winter Wrinklies, one for each course. So many thanks to Myra Shipton and Bernard. Now whilst I can hardly describe my captain's year as still young it is not yet over so maybe yet time to add to that total. It was also great to see former captain Ken Turnbull when he came in to present the LV Challenge trophy, a trophy he donated jointly with Gail Fee in their captain's year. Ken's care responsibilities mean that he no longer gets out on the course and it would be really good to welcome him back to the tee if an opportunity arose. Weekly Winners After an absence of 4 weeks, we finally returned to the course today. The conditions reflected why the course had been closed for so long and made scoring tricky, to say the least. The good news is we got round in largely pleasant conditions before the rain returned in the afternoon. Shot, or should I say trick shot, of the day, went to David Abbott who managed to hit and lodge his ball directly in the gabions on the 17th. Mick Bell though came a close second, badly pulling his approach shot to the 14th before hitting the tree to the front left of the green and rebounding onto the green. The competition was the 6th round of the George Higgins (Griffin) and Reg Davey (Phoenix) eclectics. Leaders of the individual Stableford on the day were: Phoenix:
- 1st - Peter Allanson - 18 points.
- 2nd - Bob Bason - 17 points.
- 3rd - Bob Booth - 16 points countback.
- 4th - Eddie Bowles - 16 points.
- 5th - William Bailey - 16 points.
Griffin:
- 1st - Graham Sinclair - 35 points.
- 2nd - David Keep - 32 points.
- 3rd - Russell Thorn - 31 points.
- 4th - Bob Imrie - 30 points.
- 5th - Paul Dixon - 29 points.
Twos: Just one two, Russell Thorn on the 7th. Thanks to Peter Allanson, Ade Darker and Roger Birchmore for card duty and Alex Henderson and Roger Birchmore for clubhouse duty. Next Week Next Tuesday we are playing a Canadian Greensomes on both courses. This is a pairs competition in which each player drives and plays his own ball for the second stroke, the preferred ball is then selected with the player who did not play the second stroke playing the third, strokes continue to be played alternately by players after that. It is scored as a stableford competition. Steve Atkins CVGS Captain 2019
