Captain's Xmas Charity Stableford Today we played our traditional seasonal fun competition where the format is chosen by the captain. I chose to play a team competition where individual Stableford scores contributed to a team of three aggregate. Teams comprised of players on both the Griffin and Phoenix courses but with team members not being revealed until after play. Phoenix scores were doubled so as to produce an 18 hole equivalent and provide an equal contribution to the Griffin. Competition fees all went to my charity Chestnut Tree House, together with donations a total of £285 was raised on the day. Thank you for your generosity. It was into a grey sky that those on the Griffin teed off in a shotgun start. Unfortunately, that proved to be the best of the conditions and the rain arrived an hour or so later and gradually got heavier. For the Phoenix, it was pretty much wet from the start. Most players continued gallantly to the end thinking of their unknown team members and the need to gather team points. For the few that left the course early, their scores were uplifted to an 18 hole equivalent so as not to penalise teams. Whilst the weather was not enjoyed the format certainly was with players eagerly gathered around the leaderboard display in the Phoenix bar. Thanks to Alan Rengger for developing this. I received lots of positive comments on the format and in particular how it brought together both the Griffin and Phoenix players into a single competition. Team prizes went to 9th place. The leading 5 teams were though as follows: 1st - Chris Adamson, Bill Chaffe, Edward King - 99 points 2nd - Bob Sparks, Vic Tydeman, Peter Allanson - 98 points 3rd - Terry Knight, Bob Booth, Noel Hallam - 88 points 4th - Mick Bell, Pete Hemsley, Bernard Smith - 88 points 5th - Eddie Bowles, Erik Sorensen, Russell Watt - 87 points The winners of the on-course challenges were: Nearest the pin - Phoenix 3rd Peter Allanson - Griffin 7th Alex Morrison Nearest Pin in two - Griffin 9th Bob Imrie Cottesmore Seniors Open 2020
I’ve been asked by next year’s vice-captain, Erik Sorensen, to provide a ‘heads-up’ about the 2020 Cottesmore G & CC Senior Men’s Charity Open, which will take place on 7th July. The format of the event will be familiar to many of you, being an individual Stableford competition, with a maximum handicap of 30.
When players have finished their rounds, a two-course, superior buffet will be served in our new clubhouse, after which trophy and prize winners will receive their awards. The fee is £34 for CVGS members and members of the Cottesmore Men’s section (£44 for visitors). All competitors should have a minimum age of 55 years on 07.07.2020. A proportion of each fee will be donated to two Sussex hospice charities, namely Chestnut Tree House (for children) and St. Catherine’s (for adults). More details can be found on the CVGS website, under the heading ‘Senior Mens Charity Open’, plus an online application form. Further information will be supplied nearer the time along with other methods of entering e.g. e-mail, sign-up sheets on the CVGS notice board etc.” Next Week
Next Tuesday is round 5 of the George Higgins and Reg Davey eclectics. The format on the day is individual stableford. Steve Atkins CVGS Captain 2019
