Order of Merit This is a trophy donated by Barrie Clinton and has been played for since 2010. It is a season-long competition where points are awarded according to where players finish in nominated competitions, considered to be our most prestigious. For most competitions, points are awarded for the top 6 places with the points ranging from 10 to 1. However, for the Peter Morley, Harry Bacon and Haig trophies it goes to 7th place with a points range of 15 to 1. The nominated competitions are:
- Foundation Trophy
- Graham May Trophy
- Danny Mulholland Trophy
- CVGS Seniors Open
- Dave Roberts Trophy
- Peter Morley Trophy
- Harry Bacon Trophy
- Haig Trophy
- Cowdray Cup
The final event was the Cowdray Cup played on 1 November in poor conditions and produced a dramatic climax to the competition. Steve Watson's 6th place finish was enough to give him a point and moved him from second to first position. Many congratulations to Steve. - 1st - Steve Watson 31 points
- 2nd - Paul Dixon 30
- 3rd - Wes Lourens 18
- 4th - Graham Sinclair 16
- 5th= - Alan Rengger 15
- 5th= - Ron Vance 15
Weekly Winners This week was the first time the "carry only" status had come into force. Fortunately, the competition, 4 clubs and a putter lent itself to carrying. It also provided the opportunity to play our one outstanding trophy, the 4 Clubs and a Putter on the Griffin which was originally due to be played in March but the weather got the better of that occasion. As might be expected the going was very heavy and extremely wet. In the less than appealing conditions only 24 hardy souls ventured out 14 on the Griffin and 10 on the Phoenix. The tough conditions did not seem to affect the scoring of the Phoenix group much though! Phoenix:
- 1st - Bob Bason 19 points
- 2nd - Bob Sparks 18
- 3rd - Alex Henderson 17 countback
- 4th - Pete Hemsley 17
- 5th - Paul Twine 13 countback
On the Griffin, it was a success for Mick Bell who wins our final trophy of the year (save for the leagues) with the only decent score of the day. Griffin:
- 1st - Mick Bell 31 points
- 2nd - Bernie Watson 27 countback
- 3rd - Trevor James 27
- 4th - Terry Knight 25 countback
- 5th - Steve Atkins 25
Twos: There was one-two, Alex Morrison on the 7th. Alex donated half his winnings to the Captain's Charity. Many thanks, Alex. Thanks to Geoff Mitchell, Erik Sorensen and Colin Coventry for card duty and Alex Henderson and Roger Birchmore for clubhouse duty. Next Week Next Tuesday we play the 3rd round of the Higgins and Davey eclectics. The format on the day is individual Stableford. Steve Atkins CVGS Captain 2019
