Weekly Winners It definitely had a wintery feel when we set off this morning, and with the ground remaining soft and soggy the course was certainly playing long. On the Griffin the rearranged Peter Betteridge Trophy was played, an electric storm having forced it to be abandoned at the first attempt. This is a greensomes pairs competition. On the Phoenix, an Individual Stableford was played and congratulations, in particular, go to Paul Manfield who returned with a brilliant 23 points in these difficult conditions. Leaderboards were as follows: Phoenix:
- 1st - Paul Manfield 23 points.
- 2nd - Andrew Ross 20 countback.
- 3rd - Dave Roberts 20.
- 4th - Noel Hallam 19.
- 5th - David Lees 18 countback.
Peter Betteridge Trophy (Griffin):
- 1st - Terry Knight & John Taylor 39 points.
- 2nd - Ron Vance and Alex Morrison 36 countback.
- 3rd - Wes Lourens & David Pyrah 36.
- 4th - Don Grange & David Haynes 34 countback.
- 5th - Bernie Watson and Mick Bell 34.
Thanks to Bernie Gonsalves, Russell Thorn, Bob Bason and Pete Hemsley for card duty and Bill Chaffe and Roger Birchmore for clubhouse duty. Inter Club Matches The season ended in a disappointing way with the weather getting the better of the final match away to Mid Sussex. There are no plans to rearrange it again! So now is a good time to review the season as a whole. Some 38 members represented CVGS over the course of the season. The summary results were as follows:
- Played Won Drawn Lost.
- Home 12 11 1 0.
- Away 11 3 2 6.
- Aggregate 12 9 2 1.
As might be expected the away fixtures proved tougher. However, home dominance meant that the aggregate record (scores over the home and away matches combined) was excellent with only one of the twelves matches being lost and 9 won. This good form was also reflected in the individual match record where 99 matches were won, 11 were halved and 58 lost. Most Valuable Player Alan Rengger in his captain's year donated a trophy for the most valuable player in the team for the year. This year the scoring was 3 points for winning a match, 2 points for a half, and 1 point for a loss (so there was always a positive outcome for playing for the team). Pairs were varied every match as much as possible to provide fair competition, although still selected with a view to winning the match. Only for 30 individual matches were pairs repeated, and only once did the same pair play together three times. After a long season of 23 matches the results were as follows: Points (Average points per match played) Wins
- 1st Steve Atkins 49 (2.57) 15.
- 2nd Mike Hamilton 47 (2.23) 12.
- 3rd Wes Lourens 45 (2.25) 12.
- 4th Steve Watson 43 (2.38) 12.
- 5th Bill Chaffe 40 (2.50) 11.
- 6th Alex Morrison 38 (2.0) 8.
Next Week Next Tuesday is the second round of the George Higgins (Griffin) and Rogerson (Phoenix) trophies. Rounds on the day are played as individual stablefords but with scores contributing towards these eclectic trophies. They are not qualifiers. Steve Atkins CVGS Captain 2019
