Weekly Winners
I was not able to be there this week as I was playing in the mixed fixture at Sweetwoods so many thanks to Vice Captain Alex Morrison for standing in.
On the Griffin the Damn and Blast trophy was played. The Trophy is in memory of Jerry Harrison who died in 1996 who was renowned for frequently uttering those words. It is an individual stableford with basically two mulligans that are invoked by saying damn and blast loud enough for playing partners to hear. Congratulations to winner Peter Allanson, but also very good to see Andrew Downs in the top three in an individual event.
1st - Peter Allanson 41 points 2nd - Ray Aylmore 39 count back 3rd - Andrew Downs 39 4th - Mick Brown 38 5th - Bill Chaffe
On the Phoenix a three tee team challenge was played. This involves one member of each three man tee using each of the yellow, red and blue tees on each hole. On the next hole the tee played from is rotated and so. Confused? I certainly am! However getting their heads round it were Russell Watt, Paddy Dowzer and Stan Channon, and good to see new member Kevin Egan close to the top of the leaderboard.
1st - Russell Watt, Paddy Dowzer & Stan Channon 2nd - Jack Mapplebeck, Kevin Egan & Bernard Smith 3rd - Sam Billcliff, Noel Hallam & John Hutchence
Thanks to Kevin Egan, Tom George and Noel Hallam for card duty and Bob Imrie and David Lees for clubhouse duty.

Inter Club Matches This Tuesday a mixed seniors match was played away at Sweetwoods. Although not specifically a CVGS fixture all male players were drawn from CVGS members. It was a very enjoyable occasion that was reflected in a number of our players asking me afterwards to play in the reverse fixture. However, whilst the Sweetwoods course was enjoyed it did get the better of their team. Ladies Captain Jill Lewis and myself tried to lead from the front but unfortunately we were the only winning pair in a 1.5 - 6.5 defeat.
|
Next week Next Tuesday it is round 7 of the Haig Trophy on the Griffin and the Lanka Trophy on the Phoenix. The format is individual stableford and both are qualifiers.

Morrice Fours results Having qualified for the semi -finals, our team played Royal Ashdown at Cowdray Park on 28th August. The weather was kind to us after the high temperatures experience earlier in the week. However, we were faced with a strong Royal Ashdown who had fielded their strongest team. The match was finally decided on the last putt, but on this occasion, not in our favour.
Whilst disappointed, the team fought back in the play off for 3rd-4th place. This was against Highwoods, and in which the team won convincingly.
Congratulations to everyone who played in this competition, for a fantastic overall result against some strong teams.

Captain’s Day
My Captain's Day was played on 29th August. The weather was perfect. My thanks go to those on registration, the starters, everyone that either donated cakes or helped out on the halfway house, Linda Adamson for organising the fruit basket, Anne for her flowers, Heather for setting up the course, Ruth for completing the draw, and of course Ben and Will for our fabulous course and our lunch. But mostly for the Ladies that joined in helping to make the day so enjoyable.
Ladies were awarded prizes for the’ best dressed lady on the course’,’ best dressed trolley’ and’ best dressed lady at lunch’. This proved very difficult with the amazing efforts made by everyone.
The winners were:
|
18, hole winner – Caroline East 18, hole, best front 9 -Christine Knight 18, hole, best back 9 – Viv Lyons 9, hole Griffin – Jan Hemsley 9, hole Phoenix – Peggy Davies
|
Best dressed Lady on course – Brenda Williams Best dressed trolley – Sandra Morfey Best dressed Lady at lunch – Both Gail Fee & Fee Drew |
|
Your generosity on the day helped raise £462.30 towards my charity Whoopsadaisy. A massive thank you to everyone that helped make it such a successful day. |

Revealed: Our favourite trolleys of 2019 |
Push trolley or electric trolley? Do you have a preference or have you not really thought about it that much? We have both covered as we reveal the best trolleys money can buy in 2019, and both of these winners are available through your very own pro shop. |
| Push to pass - Motocaddy Z1 Happy to go around under your own power? Then you can’t go wrong with Motocaddy’s Z1 push trolley. The Z1 is our top pick when it comes to value and practicality from a push trolley, not just because its lightweight nature is a joy to handle around the course, but also because the easy-to-fold two-step system makes it quick and easy to transport.
|
| Go electric - Motocaddy S1 Want to take a load off and let the trolley do the bulk of the work? Then there are none better than Motocaddy’s electric S1. A whisper-quiet 200W motor provides ample power throughout your round, allowing you to stay fresh for the back nine. Its stunning high-resolution LCD display has been updated for 2019 and keeps you ‘up to speed’ with battery life and speed settings.
