On Tuesday our Director of golf, Steve Grouwstra partnered Colin Niner in the Staysure qualifier at Foxhills in conditions that were perfect for golf. The course was in perfect condition and good scores were a certainty.
They got off to a fast start until a double bogey at the par 4 9th hindered their progress. That didn’t matter as Colin then birdied the 10th with a shot which got them back to 4 under for the day. Another 4 birdies on the way in secured the pair a second place finish out of a hefty 74 pairs.
Stephen and Colin will now travel to the London club on 29th July to try their luck at bringing the trophy back to Cottesmore.

What's the answer?
A topic of conversation that regularly comes up is the placement of rakes in bunkers. We have all been there where you hit your ball which rolls in to the bunker but the rake stops it from finding the flat part in the middle and sits closely to the lip.
What's the answer? Leave the rake outside the bunker. At least you won’t get dodgy lies in the bunker.
Lightning…
A few weeks ago, we had a bad spell of weather which included a strike of lightning. The pro shop immediately blew the hooter on the 18th green but unfortunately it wasn’t heard around all of the golf course, so some people stayed out there and others came in.
There isn’t too much more we can do I’m afraid but if we have the man power on the day we will endeavour to go around the golf courses in a buggy to inform everybody.
Ladies' news
Cottesmore Ladies’ success stories continue…
Congratulations to Brenda Williams and Ruth Leatherbarrow who represented Cottesmore ladies in the Jerdein Memorial Salver at The Dyke on Monday, finishing tied 4th out of 45 teams. This is a singles’ qualifying stableford competition played off full handicap where they scored a very creditable combined score of 69 points. Well done Ladies.
Never give up...
Jenny Frei and Irene Matheson, having got through to the 5th round of The Daily Mail Foursomes competition, played away against Cranleigh. They were 3 down with 3 to play and finally lost on the 19th hole. They certainly did not give up without a fight and should be proud of their achievement against a strong opposition.
Ladies results...
This month’s qualifying medal results over 18 holes were as follows:
Coming up... Good luck to Division 2, who play their quarter final match against East Sussex National at East Brighton on Thursday. Let’s keep the flag flying for Cottesmore.

We held our annual invite to the Ladies Section to join us in a stableford team waltzcompetition. It is always good to get the two sections together so it is a very popular and this is reflected in the large field, with 66 playing over the two courses.
The sun shone, there was little wind and the course was in great condition. So the opportunity to play some good golf which the scores suggest was duly taken.

Inter-club matches
A reminder though of two upcoming mixed matches against Sweetwoods away on Tuesday 3rd September and at home on Monday 21st October. If you would like to play in either of these matches please contact John Taylor or myself.
Cottesmore Pro Am
To make this a successful event which is taking place next Friday, Paddy needs his full complement of volunteers - ball spotters, buggy drivers, fairway flag marshalls etc. At present he is very short on numbers so if you are able to help please either contact Paddy direct or sign up on the sheet he has provided on the Vets noticeboard. I know Paddy would be very appreciative of your support.
Next week...
Next Tuesday is Round 6 of the Haig Trophy on the Griffin and the Lanka Trophy on the Phoenix abd the format is stableford and these are qualifying rounds.

More bang for your buck
Golf clothing has come a long way from the old-style knickerbockers worn in the early 1900s - you can hardly imagine popping to the supermarket in a pair of those today. Fortunately, these days, golf brands make clothing that is high performing on the course but looks good enough to set the trend off it too.
Galvin Green SS19 apparel
Take this polo from Galvin Green, which has really caught our eye this season. The yellow and black design drips a classy yet modern look that is so versatile it is guaranteed to be something of a head turner away from the course as well as on it.
The Monte polo is a worthy addition to any golfing wardrobe, so come on down and take a closer look at Galvin Green's range next time you're at the club.
