Haig and Lanka trophies - Round 4
The weather was kind to us this Tuesday with the forecast heavy rain arriving later than predicted and not until all groups had made it back to the clubhouse. The great condition of the course and slightly slower greens following sanding made this again a good opportunity to score well. I anticipate that a number of the leading players will have achieved a well-earned reduction in handicap.
Top scores were as follows.:
Lanka Trophy - Phoenix: 1st - Edward King 21 points 2nd - Pete Hemsley 20 countback 3rd - Brian Vennard 20 4th - Doug Bennett 19 countback 5th - Paddy Dowzer 19
Haig Trophy - Griffin: 1st - Russell Thorn 41 points 2nd - Steve Watson 40 3rd - Bob Sparks 39 countback 4th - Graham Proctor 39 5th - Barry Keating 38 countback
Twos: Russell Thorn (7th), Wes Lourens (3rd), Bob Sparks (17th) Thanks to Chris Adamson, Don Grange and Paul Twine for card duty and Graham Sinclair, Roger Birchmore and Alex Henderson for clubhouse duty.
Inter Club Matches last Wednesday we visited Goodwood, playing the challenging Downs course. Rain was forecast for the afternoon but arrived shortly after play commenced mid-morning and gradually got heavier as the round went on. However, some good golf was still played in a very tight match. Cottesmore were on a run of 5 consecutive victories, but although we were unable to make it six, a creditable draw was achieved. Two narrow victories and two halved matches enabled us to get the three points for the draw. Top performers this week were Bob Sparks and myselfn with a 3 and 2 win.
Next week
Next Tuesday is the 3rd round of the Morley and Bacon trophies on the Griffin and the Rogerson on the Phoenix. The format is medal and it is a qualifying round on both courses. Additionally, on the Griffin it is the Chairman's putter competition. This is awarded to the player making the fewest strokes on the putting surface. Steve Atkins CVGS Captain 2019
