In this week’s newsletter we look to The Masters which is finally here, the Phoenix stableford kicks off and Stuart wins our inaugural Titleist Pro V1 raffle. Enjoy. |
The week we've been waiting for...
My favourite week of the golfing calendar is here. The Masters! It always gives us drama and tension over the rolling fairways of Augusta National. This year promises to be a classic with so many top players playing well at the minute. Who will win? We will find out on Sunday. |
Please be aware...
Preferred lies in the general area will stop this Sunday! As of this Sunday (Masters) we will be back to preferred lies on closely mown areas only so make sure you don’t pick your ball up in the rough. |
Our inaugural winner
Congratulations to Stuart Radford who was our inaugural winner of the Pro V1 raffle. We will be running this throughout the year, so if you have a spare pound when in the shop just pick your number and that’s you in the hat. |
Don't delay...
In the past we have offered our club shirts and sweaters at a discounted price for our Cottesmore teams. I am pleased to announce we can do the same again this year. Our White club shirt is usually £39.99 but is available for just £25.00 and our club sweaters are usually £62.99 but with our offer just £41.99. If you would like to take advantage of this amazing deal, please let the pro shop know as soon as you can. I will be ordering very soon.

The latest men's news...
It’s Masters week. Who will put on the Green Jacket?
Match results
B’s v Pyecombe (away) drew 3-3. Crown league team beat Wickham Park 3.5-1.5.
Well done. Unlucky to Dean Smith and Martin Lambert who lost away to Clandon Regis in the Daily Mail foursomes.
Friday saw our first 9 hole stableford on the Phoenix and it was great to see people out there.
1st: Ben Powell 21 points 2nd: Jon Penalver 21 points 3rd: Martin Bolton-Smith 21 points
I never knew that playing a competition on the Phoenix, your handicap gets adjusted so much. For myself playing off 15 I only received 6 shots over the 9 holes and my playing partner, Steve Grouwstra, was playing off +2. It shows it’s not as easy as you think. After my score of 21 points I am happy to say I got cut to 14. That’s one way to get my handicap down I suppose.
Fourball auction Many of you would have seen on Facebook we have been running an auction for a fourball at Chartham Park. If you are not on Facebook but would be interested in making a bid, please contact me on 07834 724320. The auction will end on Saturday 13th April at 9pm. Good luck.

The latest ladies news...
The Summer Aggregate on the Phoenix for the 9 hole ladies has now started and so has the eclectic for the 18 hole ladies on the Griffin. The weather was poor again last Thursday and so the medal was not played. However, the 9 hole ladies, whose tee time was later in the day, did venture out! The winner of the day was Caroline East with a magnificent 24 points and a well deserved 3 shot cut in handicap. Well done, Caroline. The medal was played on Saturday with Iona being the winner of the day and winner overall in the silver medal and Meg Mitchell the winner of the bronze medal.
Unfortunately, our Div 2 team lost away to a Bognor team and at home to Royal Ashdown. Both teams are very strong, but we hope to get revenge in the return matches.
This week is the monthly Stableford and the PK Trophy with the weather looking very much improved. The following week is the Easter Greensomes, followed by the Spring Meeting on 25th April. Let’s hope the worst of the weather has now gone and we can look forward to some enjoyable golf.

Cottesmore prevail at home to Chartham Park
Last Wednesday we took on Chartham Park at home. A fixture that has been revived after an absence of 3 to 4 years. And a very successful resuscitation it was too, played in great spirit and camaraderie with many of the Chartham Park players seeking me out at the end to say how much they had enjoyed it.
Chartham Park ladies were playing Cottesmore Ladies when the fire broke out and were in the clubhouse at the time. Both Chartham Park captain Keith Johnson’s wife, Barbara, and my wife Linda were present having played in that match. Instead of the customary joke in his speech Keith read out a very nice ode to that occasion and Cottesmore, which is reproduced below. As to the result it was a victory to Cottesmore by 6 matches to 2. Biggest winners were the pairings of Alex Morrison and Mike Hamilton, and David Keep and David Pyrah both with 5 and 4 victories.
Ode to Cottesmore
To this charming golf course of Cottesmore
Our dear Chartham ladies have been once before. Sad to say as they lunched, And, they do claim no blame! The whole damned place was quite soon aflame!
Now our gentlemen’s visit has been very nice, So let’s hope that lightening isn’t going to strike twice! We were warned the 19th might not be all weather, and a Pub was where we would then get together.
But all has gone well and we’ve had a great day, Good golfing, good food, good sport all the way.
Though it’s great to see things rise Phoenix like from the ashes, I bet you didn’t miss all those Wedding day bashes! With posing couples all over the course, Weekend Comps must have been a trial of force!
We look forward to welcoming you to Chartham next year, but just to be safe we’ll keep extinguishers near! Thanks to Keith Johnson, Seniors Captain, Chartham Park
Swinging in the Rain Tuesday brought another wet day, but the decision was made to press ahead with the competition, the first round of the Morley and Bacon trophies on the Griffin and the Rogerson on the Phoenix.
The saying goes that when the going gets tough the tough get going - well there were not many putting their hands up to be in the tough category. Only 12 ventured out on the Griffin and 5 on the Phoenix. As it happened the rain was not as bad as forecast but still unpleasant.
Thanks to Alex McMinn, Dave Middleton and Colin Coventry for card duty and Bob Imrie and Roger Birchmore for clubhouse duty. Congratulations to the leading players this week and particularly Erik Sorensen for rising to the top on only his second week with us:
Phoenix - Rogerson Trophy
1st - Paul Twine 35 (net) 2nd - Peter Swann 39 3rd - Paul Manfield 41
Griffin - Peter Morley Trophy (Handicaps 19 and under)
1st - Paul Dixon 76 Count Back 2nd - Mick Bell 76 3rd - Graham Sinclair 79
Griffin: Harry Bacon Trophy (Handicaps 20 and over)
1st - Erik Sorensen 72 2nd - Wes Lourens 74 3rd - Steve Watson 78

A driver is a powerful beast, sometimes too powerful if a hole has a hazard within range. In this scenario, you have a plethero of options to choose from, but there is one that is often overlooked. |
Picture the scene You're stood on a par-4 tee box and there’s a water hazard 240 yards away. What do you do? Many of you will reach for your longest iron on auto-pilot, however a custom-fitted fairway wood might just be the perfect solution; getting you further down the hole and closer to the green. | |
|
Why is this often overlooked? A lot of golfers don't have confidence in hitting their fairway wood because, quite simply, they don't use it enough. But with technology to help you hit them better - such as the Spin Control System in Lynx's Black Cat fairway wood that offers fantastic control and trajectory - it's time you gave them another go. |
Custom fitting is key We're delighted to see so many of you come to us for a custom fit when you're after a new driver or set of irons, but why does it stop there? A custom fitting is so important in ensuring you get the most from any new purchase, whether that's a driver, fairway wood or putter. |
