Imagine my despair...
I don’t mean to start with something so negative, but it has to be addressed. Over the last few days the weather has been kinder to us, which has resulted in the course drying out nicely and the greenkeepers able to get on the course more, which is always good. Imagine my despair when I received this picture from one of the guys on Monday evening. |
Why anyone would want to take two huge divots out of a green is beyond me, but this is unacceptable.
As I have said in the past, the green staff work tirelessly all year round to give us what I would class as one of the best courses in Sussex.
If anyone suspects or sees someone doing this kind of thing, please report it to Steve in the shop.
Rant over.

Now to something a little more upbeat...
We have more new arrivals. PING are the latest to deliver some of their 2019 range and it looks fab.
The new stand and cart bags are very stylish and functional, and as always with PING, the quality is first class. Plus, we have taken delivery of the very exciting G410 range from PING used by the likes of Bubba Watson and Tony Finau.
This promises to be a very good year for PING.

Growing in popularity...
Thursday's weather was a lot kinder to us and the Winter Aggregate was well supported again. This competition seems to be growing in popularity with the Phoenix course looking good. Linda Atkins will be doing a rules presentation on 21st February following the Winter Aggregate at 1.30. I would recommend you stay if you are able as I am sure you will find it worthwhile. Sunday is the Chicken Peck and the Boozers Scramble is 24th February. And don’t forget the 50% OFF sale in the pro shop.
|
Don't forget to enter...
The Royal Marsden Annual eclectic is available to enter on the P.S.I but make sure you enter prior to the first qualifying event, the Bogey Cup.
Also, we have some closing dates fast approaching so please make sure you enter in time.
I appreciate the courses have been closed recently but can I ask to all the remaining winter knockout contenders to wrap up as quickly as possible.
Thanks M.B.S

Cyril Strudwick
Peter Swann who was a good friend of Cyril has provided a brief obituary:
Cyril was a well known and liked member of the CVGS. He joined the vets following retirement from a lifelong career in liability insurance. His name was on the honours board with partner of the day Geoff Chalfont for winning the Jim Richardson trophy but his real claim to fame was a hole in one at the 17th during that round. He carried the very ball in his bag as a constant reminder of that happy day. The course will no longer resound to his ecstatic cries of "come on Cyril". A good friend.
Cyril's funeral will be at Worthing Crematorium, Findon on Thursday 28 February at 10:40.

Safety on the Griffin 9th
A polite reminder to send one of your group to the top of the hill on the 9th to check that the fairway is clear before anybody hits from the tee. The importance of this safety requirement was emphasised today with one of our members being hit by a fellow member teeing off in the group behind.

Weekly Winners With the forecast promising mild weather for a few days it was a surprise to see temperatures at freezing when I got up today. But with the great yellow lamp in the sky glowing brightly the temperature quickly rose and made for a pleasant playing conditions albeit still very muddy in places. It was also a nice reminder that Spring will soon be on its way.
Today we played a Winter Wrinklies, a medal format with both handicap and age being deducted to produce the net score. A format where youth is not to your advantage. I took the opportunity to play an early round in my year with the Phoenix Group who are always great fun to play with. Thanks go to Barry Clinton and Peter Swann for card duty and Alan Rengger who did clubhouse duty for both courses.

Countback is on age, highest coming out on top and yes those are minus scores, so particularly well done Dave Tomes.

There will always come a time when, as a golfer, you need to really attack the pin to give yourself a chance of making a certain score on a hole. However, whether or not you choose to depends as much on the positioning of the flag than anything else. |
| Scenario #1 | Take the above illustration, for example; with the flag cut so close to both the bunker and the edge the green which slopes away from you, you would be better off taking any danger out of play by aiming for the middle of the green. This will help you avoid trouble and any dropped shots, even if you miscue slightly. |
| Scenario #2 | However, if the flag is in a more central position – as shown in the second illustration above – then you can be a lot more aggressive with your shot. Take aim straight at the pin and commit to your shot. Hopefully, you’ll be reaping the rewards when you step onto the green for a great chance of making a two-putt par. |
