Welcome. In this week’s newsletter our winter sale starts, a new competition and a very sad passing. |
What a win for Rickie Fowler!
Rickie tried his best to throw it away but grit and determination, plus a little help from Branden Grace, helped him claim his 5th tour win.
Fowler was cruising to victory until a shambolic triple bogey at 11 followed by a bogey at 12 derailed his round completely (If you didn’t see it, please find it on YouTube). One minute he was 5 ahead, the next, one behind. How do you come back from that? By playing the last four holes in two under, that’s how. This should be a lesson to us all that even when you have a bad hole or two, you can still recover and go on to win. When I saw this was only his 5th tour win I was very surprised. Someone of Fowler’s ability, I would expect him to have many more victories under his belt. Considering he has amassed well over $35million dollars in prize money and over 60 top ten’s you would have thought he was a little more prolific than this. Nevertheless, Rickie is an amazing talent and I am sure this will kick start his year to potentially a major win.

New competition Over the period of March to October there are seven of each of the midweek medal, midweek stableford, monthly medal and monthly stableford. This year, to try and encourage more of us to play in these, we are going to introduce a set of aggregate competitions. One for each. The aggregates will work by calculating your best scores from three of the seven competitions. You will only need to play in three to qualify but the more you play the better chance you have to improve your aggregate. You don’t have to enter this competition as it will run in the background on the P.S.I and entry will be free.

Hopefully there's no repeat...
Well it's been a slow start to the year golf wise with the course closed on Thursday, but it was nice to catch up for a coffee. Let's hope we don't have a repeat of the bad weather that Heather encountered in her first weeks as captain last year! |
Many thanks
My thanks go to Linda Atkins for her excellent 'rules night' presentation. It was good to see so many ladies come along to support. She will be doing a further presentation in February for those of you that were not able to attend.
|
A great success
My coffee morning on Tuesday was also a great success raising £117.10 towards my charity Whoopsadaisy. Thanks to all of you that attended, bought cakes and indeed donated cakes, not forgetting Ruth's homemade fruit vodka!

Coming up...
Ladies are needed for the Boozers Scramble on 24th February; if you wish to play, but don't have a team, contact myself or Christine Knight. This Thursday is The Winter Aggregate - fingers crossed for better weather. |
Cyril Strudwick
It is with great sadness that I report that Cyril died on Saturday 2 February. I will always remember Cyril as a true gentleman and as nice a man as you could ever wish to meet. He will be a true loss to the section. Our thoughts are with his family.

Weekly Winners Well after both courses being closed for 6 consecutive days, it was a relief that they were open today to get my year off to a good start. The competition was a three player yellow ball. A competition that we have not played for many years, as a victim of the weather. In fact, not played for so long that even long standing CVGS members were struggling to reacquaint themselves with the format. The going can only be described as soft with some evidence of ice still to be seen.
A menacing mist hovered above the course for most of the round and finally won out when the klaxon sounded with players on the back nine. As a result, the competition on the Griffin was curtailed to a nine hole event. The Phoenix players managed to complete their 9 holes.
The klaxon did not come though before I played the 14th and was able to have a close up view of the improvements there - a new bridge before the green, paths to and from it and a re-sculptured water feature. The ponds and waterfalls to the right will surely greatly enhance the attractiveness of the hole. Coming out on top today: Phoenix:
1st - David Sellwood, John Oswin, Brian Vennard - 71pts
2nd -Hugh Masterson, Pete Hemsley, Bob Bason - 64pts
3rd - Russell Watt, David Tomes, Peter Allanson - 63pts Griffin:
1st - Graham Sinclair, David Haynes, Steve Atkins - 70pts
2nd - Mick Brown, Ken Brightwell, Bob Sparks - 69pts
3rd - Ron Vance, Bob Imrie, Wes Lourens - 64pts

New shoes? Walk this way... |
Golf is first and foremost a walking sport, with many of us strolling more than five miles in a pair of shoes every single round. You might read that fact and instantly recall getting off the 18th green wanting nothing more than a sit-down, feet aching, after realising your shoes aren’t as comfortable as they ought to be. Well, if that is the case, it might well be time for a change... |
Just arrived - Skechers Pro V4 Skechers has been making huge strides in golf over recent years, and their 2019 footwear range looks set to continue that trend.
