Welcome to another exciting edition of our weekly newsletter, we hope you've had a good week on and off the course. In this week’s newsletter the cold weather arrives, we have East Brighton success and the ladies enjoy St. Andrews. Enjoy the read! |
A word from the pro… A big thank you to Paul and Martin for a great day out last week at East Brighton. One I will not forget in a while.

New arrivals... The shop has started to change appearance over the last week or so with the summer stock moving to the sale rail and the winter stock taking centre stage. The Galvin Green autumn/winter collection is great this year with baselayers, ½ zips, lined sweaters and waterproofs all on display. Check them out. You will not be disappointed. |

On the course... The Ladies Stableford was held on an extremely windy Thursday, however, that did not deter the ladies coming home with some great scores. The Griffin winner was Linda Adamson with 38 points, and Jean Thomson on the Phoenix with 20 points, very good scores so well done. On Monday, Linda Atkins and Christine Knight played in the Grand Final of the Coronation Foursomes at St. Andrews. Iona McKean and Penny Gaunt also played in the Yonex Ladies Tour Championship at the Buckinghamshire, with Iona and Penny just one point behind the winners! Fantastic, well done ladies. The weather is looking great for the Ladies Autumn Meeting this Thursday, so I will continue to pray for you! Any ladies able to play in the LV Challenge on Thursday, 4 October or the Rolling Pin on Saturday, 6 October please sign-up via the website ASAP please. The Club Captain's Charity Night has been rearranged for Friday, 5 October, please contact Christine Knight if you would like to enter a team. A personal thank you from myself to the pro shop for arranging my visit to Callaway to be fitted for my new clubs. Here’s hoping to a lower handicap.

Captain, Vice Captain and Pro Trophy A small update to this week's news for you all... For those that managed to read through to the end of the newsletter this week, firstly well done - Mrs Young commented it was quite a long one. Secondly, you'd be aware that Steve, Martin, and I were playing at East Brighton yesterday in the Captain, Vice-Captain, and Pro Invitational. Just over a year ago, Steve and I competed along with Trevor and we won the event and returned home with the trophy. I'm very pleased to say that our defense of the title was successful. In fact, we smashed it. In a two-best-scores stableford the three of us carded 90 points, some 12 points clear of second place. In an event where we needed 36 scores between us, we each contributed 12 scores - perfect team work! It was a little windy, to put it mildly and it seemed like we were playing in to it on every hole. Club selection was tough and the par fours were playing like fives. |
|
Steve was playing very well and level par through 17 holes. An unfortunate double on the last (9th) meant just missing out on the Pro prizes. Still, another solid performance from our DoG and an absolute joy to watch. MBS and I were obviously pulled along in Steve's slipstream as we both had an equally good time popping in the par and birdie putts. For me, it was great to be part of another winning team in this event. Yet again, Cottesmore's name is out there for everyone to see. Best of luck to Martin and Steve for next year's event - I hope you get to retain it.

Final Words The observant among you will have noted that I finally joined that exclusive club - carded my first ever hole-in-one on the 4th. What a day... |
Round 8 of the Haig and Lanka Trophy Competitions The weather has begun to cool off a little and some members will have needed to scrape ice off windscreens on Tuesday. However, the sun was shining, there was little breeze and so the scene was set to a competitive finish to the Haig and Lanka Trophy Series. A total of 62 members took to the courses today, 38 on the Griffin playing in the Haig Trophy and 24 playing in the Lanka Trophy on the Phoenix course. I was playing with Graham Proctor and Alex Morrison and apart from the very early birds we were the first group out. My opening five holes scored me the following points 0, 1, 2, 3, 4... by the time we reached the 7th hole the sequence had been broken due to my inability to score a three for five points on the 6th hole! Needless to say the golf today threw up the usual eclectic mix of the good, the bad and the ugly. My good front nine was as good as it got whereas Alex Morrison got better and better as the round went on. Despite this magnificent comeback Alex still didn’t figure in the top five today. The results of today’s competitions are shown below and congratulations are due to David Owen and John Hutchence for their excellent scores. Commiserations are offered to Ron Vance who had a two on the second hole of the Griffin course meaning five stableford points on a single hole. His score on this one hole alone was approximately 20% of his total round score – you do the maths. Despite this brilliant eagle Ron hadn’t entered the twos and so the pot of £7.50 carries over to next time.

CVGS vs. Singing Hills (Away) - Monday, 24 September In many respects this is the game that should never have taken place. A decision made very early in the season to change the date of this match so that it didn’t clash with the British Masters at Walton Heath caused utter confusion for both sides. Luckily we had our dates correct and the opposition only realised that a match had to be played 48 hours before tee off time! A hastily put together team didn’t have any adverse effects on the Singing Hills players as they romped to a 7 - 1 win on the day. The only glimmer of success for Cottesmore came from the pairing of Steve Watson and Alan Rengger. This was particularly pleasing as Steve is a relatively new member of the CVGS and was playing off a generous handicap. Nevertheless, everyone has to make the most of what help is given and Steve certainly did this. It was a hard fought win with Alan Rengger playing a major part in holding the ship steady – well done team Rengger and Watson. Elsewhere on the course Paul Cox and myself were soundly beaten by a better pairing on the day, but not before we gave them a scare. Despite early season problems with the course the Singing Hills ground staff had made a fantastic effort to turn the course around. A bright and frosty start saw the course looking at its best. |
New irons to improve your game |
Buying a set of clubs is exciting, but can be a tricky decision - you might love the look of the short irons, but feel a bit daunted by the longer clubs further up the set. However, you can always mix and match your clubs so that your long irons are more forgiving and your short irons are more workable, allowing you to strike approach shots from any distance with confidence. |
Mix & match with Lynx Why not try combining the short irons of Lynx's Forged CB series with the longer irons of the Prowler VT? The VT's extra forgiveness, provided by a hollow head design, gives you better performance on any off-centre strikes, meaning that your long iron shots won't stray as wide when you mishit the ball. Combine this with the Forged CB's short irons, which feature a narrow sole, thin topline and minimal offset for better workability and increased confidence lower down the set, and you'll be peppering the flags from your wedges up to your long irons. Could mixing sets be the answer you've been looking for? |
