Welcome to another exciting edition of our weekly newsletter, we hope you've had a good week on and off the course. This week we take a look at the exciting build up to The Ryder Cup, the end of summer sale begins and Josh Greig wins. Enjoy the read! |
A word from the pro
One of the greatest sports events in the world is around the corner and excitement is starting to bubble. The Ryder Cup is the highlight of an already brilliant golfing schedule with Team Europe and Team U.S.A going to battle in France. Over the last decade or so we have seen so many Europeans apply their trade in the U.S which makes every Ryder Cup that little more interesting because they play with their U.S counterparts on a regular basis. They all know each other’s games, but more importantly their weaknesses. The American team looks extremely strong with so many of them being victorious in majors over the last few years. That being said, the European team also have major winners in the squad with Stenson, Garcia and now Molinari. This year promises to be a classic and I cannot wait.

Peter Morley, Harry Bacon Trophy and Rogerson Series Results (round 6)
Fifty three members turned out on Tuesday with 32 playing on the Griffin and 21 playing on the Phoenix. A slightly lower turnout than recent weeks but still well over 50% of the membership. I suspect some members didn’t play due to puzzling over what to wear on the day. If any of them were like me then they will have had a choice of clothing ready but would’ve been puzzled by the weather. Forecast to be warm, breezy and bright after a cloudy start is was in fact breezy, a little fresh and wet. However, late morning saw the sun break through. The strong breeze enabled many of us to hit shots further than normal. This isn’t always an advantage as club choice can prove difficult. Overall the scores returned today were a little higher than many of us would’ve liked but nevertheless I think we still enjoyed our round.

Ladies invite to Vets - Thursday 13th September 2018
Last Thursday many of the CVGS members enjoyed a friendly and eventful competition with the ladies. Organised superbly by Jill Lewis there was an 18 hole and 9 hole 3 ball ‘Dusty Bin’ competition with nearest the pin prizes up for grabs as well as overall winners’ prizes. All three players scores counted on hole 1, the two best on hole two and the single best score on hole three. This was then repeated on the next three holes etc. An excellent meal of Chicken and vegetables followed by lemon mousse was enjoyed by all in the clubhouse. Well done to the kitchen staff as the food was great. The overall winners were Bob Imrie, Shirley Vance and Linda Adamson.

Quiz night
The first quiz hosted in the new clubhouse will be in aid of the Rockinghorse. I have to say my mum is very pleased these are back on again now! As it's not being held over the Ryder Cup weekend anymore, there's no excuse for you not to come along and test your mettle and see if you can beat the captain's team!
Click here to download the entry form. Or email Christine Knight at nick-christine@tiscali.co.uk. Entry fee is £5 per person, or £12 per person if you would like to eat (choice of Beef Lasagne or Chicken Curry). Food is served from 18:30 and the quiz starts at 19:30. I hope to see you there as this is the last of the quizzes for my charity. |
Rolling Pin
There are still some spaces left in this competition where the men take on the ladies. Remember bragging rights last a whole year. To enter please sign up on the PSI or website.

A's v B's
I've noted an interesting e-mail doing the rounds; it seems the A Team are approaching this year's event with the same nonchalant confidence as usual. Ten years since the Bees won this event I thhink it's about time the Bees turned this one around.
This is open to anyone who has played this year for the A Team, Bees or Crown League. The real challenge is who's last at the bar at the end of the evening. Sign up via the PSI or website or contact the team managers. |
Masters
The last open trophy competition of the year is always well attended, last year we had 97 entrants and although this year's Masters is over a month way we already have 38 players booked in. Don't miss out, it will a great competition and big field to compete against. No 'Green Jacket' as a prize, though. Entries will close 7th October. |
Greenkeepers Revenge
Last fun event of the year, and I'm holding it during the day in the hopes we can get a decent field. Ben and the team will be putting the pins out on the Phoenix in some pretty silly positions. As the last charity event of the year for me, I hope to be able to make it a good one for you all. Sign up is on the PSI and website.

BIRCHWOOD - We did it!
They say you can only beat who you're playing, and aside the early defeat at the Nevill, that's exactly what the team went out and did. Congratulations Team Birchwood on a fantastic campaign in the Birchwood Plate. The team won matches against Goodwood, Rustington, Slinfold, and Waterhall to reach the final against Selsey at the testing East Sussex National East Course. Cottesmore strolled through with a 5-0 win. It's a really impressive achievement and I'd like the thank everyone who got us there; Jason Davey, Trevor Pigram, Martin Gould, Joe Yeates, Ed Whiffin, Dean Smith, Stuart Radford, Alan Greig, Barry Peate, Donald Day, Rob Laverick, Neil Cockerill, and Simon Cripps.
Also thanks to everyone who came along to support the team on match days, it really does make a difference to have you around. Huge pat on the back to our Team Captain, Andy Peate for running the team so well for a second year. I'm going to miss the flap-jacks next year. You've all made a 2018 captain very proud, thank you, this really means a lot to me. If anyone would like to put their name down for next year's team, there is a sign-up sheet on the men's noticeboard in the clubhouse. Teams are made up of five pairs, each with one Category Two (6-12) and one Category Three (13-20) player. Let's aim to get the trophy back next year.

Cottesmore Pro-Am
I played in my first Cottesmore Pro-Am on the 7th. I should really apologise to Neil Cockerill and Nigel Powell for my poor play, but it was a good warm-up for the Birchwood final. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and it was great to play with Sam Smitherman who was at Cottesmore a few years ago. Different game for the Pros. The day was organised very well and the silent auction this year consisted of items donated by the members. Early indications are we raised a touch over £1,600 for the captain's charities.
|
I really have too many people to thank, and if I try and thank them all I will only end up forgetting someone important, so I won't embarrass myself. So thanks to everyone who helped get the day organised, it really is a huge effort by everyone, top job all round. Our team's score of 12-under didn't seem too bad to me, that's until I got in and saw some of the other scores around. Clear winners on the day, with a mighty 20-under were Dean Smith, Ross Davies, and Jake Ibrahim, ably assisted by their pro from Rustington, Michael Bullen.
I should also congratulate our very own pro, Steve Grouwstra for a fantastic round of golf on the day. Steve managed to shoot two under and only missed out on top spot by a shot. Well done mate, hope that form is there for our trip to East Brighton tomorrow. |
Anniversary Scramble
It was a busy weekend at Cottesmore, as we had the rescheduled Anniversary Scramble on the Sunday. Thank you to everyone who brought and bought raffles prizes and tickets, we raised £402 towards the junior's fund for next year. This is over half the amount they need to keep the section running each year. As you'll know from the competition results this year, the junior's section is very important for the club and bred this year's Club Champion, Peter Thomas. We had a great turnout, with 80 players from across all the sections. We always seem to get some silly scores in the scrambles, I'm not sure how the teams do it, that probably says a lot about my golf. This year's attainers of the silly score, and winning by 1.1 shots, with a net score of 55.9 were Greg O'Conner, Andrew Peate, Paul Dixon, and Shirley Vance. Well done team, but we're all winners really, right? Right?

Autumn Rosebowl
Our last major of the year, the Autumn Rosebowl, was played across the weekend of the 15th. I'd booked us all some good weather for the weekend, but I had to trade the lack of rain for a bit of wind. Here we go then, 36 hole medal, from the plates, and some interesting pin positions, especially the 8th - nice.
Of course I'm going to say the course was playing well, I managed one of a handful (and that's quite a small hand at that) of under-par rounds this year. Alas, I was nowhere near the leaders on day one though. Ed Whiffin held that honour with a gross 74 and net 65. Ian Buchanan led the scratch, also with a gross 74. Also in contention in the net were Andy Peate (66) and Mike Frei (67), I know which one of those two had a Saturday evening replete of red wine and which one went to bed early. I think something happened to my golf clubs overnight. Sunday didn't go too well. A scratchy round and hacking away like Jack Nicholson on a bathroom door, carding a 10 on the 11th saw my weekend finally done.
Not everyone was having the problems I did. Plenty of decent scores came through on day two. In the scratch, Craig Millyard bettered his 79 on Saturday with a 76 to take 3rd place with a total 155. Improving on Saturday too, Mark Waddell added a mere 74 to his round one 80 to total out at 154 for the weekend, securing second place. Over in the net, Ethan Ballam was steady all weekend with scores of 70 and 69 to pick up third place with a net 139. Searching for a par on the last, but just missing out, was Andy Peate whose net 72 gave him a total of 138 for second place. Taking both honours over the weekend, winning the scratch and net, Josh Greig totalled a net 138 (71 & 76) and gross 146 (75 & 71). Congratulations Josh, a great performance over the two days and a well deserved win.
|
As is becoming customary, there were place prizes for the best scores on Saturday and Saturday for those not making the top three. Saturday's top dogs were Mike Frei (67) and Ed Whiffin (65). Sunday's best were Alan Greig (69) and an incredible (must be a record?) score from Iain McKay (59). Yes, 59. Enjoy your handicap cuts, boys. Well played. Well done to all the twos winners; but I must mention Russell Jacob who decided to do it the hard way and get his for an eagle on the 9th. Nice for the eclectic. Thanks to you all for playing and supporting the competition. It's such a pleasure to do the presentations with so many of you in the room. My eternal thanks to President Paddy Dowzer, who came up Sunday morning to see the leaders out on the first and did a marvellous job of assisting with the presentations - he's the Sam Fox to my Mick Fleetwood. Thanks to Ben and the team for giving us such a great track to play on; to Margaret Brice and Martin Bolton-Smith for your help with registration; to Peter Thomas, Trevor Pigram, and Donald Day for all your help with the cards; and to Nigel Hartwright for a very long two days out on the 4th, I understand this was one of the more testing competitions for our tee shots there.
|
Final Words
I'd like to wish the best of luck to Steve Grouwstra and Martin Bolton-Smith for tomorrow. They'll need it as I'm making up the third spot in the Captain, Vice-Captain, and Pro Trophy at East Brighton. Let's see if we can keep hold of that trophy again this year, for the club. |
With the Ryder Cup coming up next week, we can expect plenty of tense moments, particularly on the greens. You’ll probably notice that players on both sides will have the ability to hole out under the huge amounts of pressure – who can forget Ian Poulter’s clutch putt on the 16th green at Medinah in 2012? |
Find a putter you can trust To replicate these kind of putts, whether that's in the monthly medal or playing for money with your friends, you need to choose a flatstick you can trust. Why not try out the Lynx Prowler putter? The main piece of technology that's going to help make more putts is its Curved Face Technology, which reduces backspin at impact to create a truer roll. It also had a unique T-alignment system that'll help improve your aim, making this blade one worth considering if you want to hole those clutch putts.
