Another magnificent turn out on both courses saw a total of sixty five members playing today. Forty two players out on the Griffin contesting the Robin Burchett Anniversary Trophy with twenty three players out on the Phoenix having a similar competition using six carefully selected clubs and a putter. In amongst the Griffin players were two new members playing for handicap purposes – welcome to Derek Millard and Ray Aylmore. Despite the heavy rains over the recent weekend (a little water lay in the ‘new pond’ at the junction of 1st and 15th fairways the course was playing beautifully with the greens being fast and true. It has been very pleasing to see the increased number of members playing our Tuesday competitions and now we have good clubhouse facilities hopefully the enthusiasm can be maintained as we move into autumn and winter. As usual I was on the lookout for unusual play from those out on the course today. The group I was playing in (myself, Barry Keating and Barrie Clinton) managed to card regular blobs followed by three point holes. Barry Keating seemed to flirt with most trees, ditches and divot marks whilst I had the most adventurous hole of the day on the 4th. I carefully lined up my tee shot as usual looking to land my ball middle to left at the top of the hill – wrong! Instead, a less than magnificent shot saw my ball hit the buggy being used by Barrie Clinton and rebound down the 3rd fairway lodging itself in the thick heather. At least the ball ended up just forward of where it started. My recovery shot then lodged itself close to (and behind) one of the tall pine trees forcing my third shot to be played out sideways. I had used three shots to progress 20 yards in front of my initial tee position!! Five further shots and I had the ball in the hole.
