The Morley / Bacon Competition Phoenix Medal Tuesday dawned cloudy and muggy.
I had intended to arrive at the clubhouse early so that I could wish Alex McMinn a very happy 80th birthday. However, being late home after watching Liverpool cruise to a win over Crystal Palace on Monday night, I had to wait until our paths crossed at the junction of the 14th and 8th holes. The clouds gathered and a few spots of rain had members raising umbrellas. However, this was short lived and a total of 67 members (39 on the Griffin, 28 on the Phoenix) enjoyed varying amounts of success on a course that is very quickly regaining a lush green look. I was playing with Russell Thorn and Paul Dixon today. A special mention to both of them for encouraging me all the way round. Russell had a particularly unlucky round as 10 or more putts from distance just failed to drop, stopping less than an inch or two from the hole on every occasion! Russell’s driving and fairway play was as normal and had some of the wildlife on the course running for cover. There were two winners of our weekly twos competition today with both players achieving this on the 17th hole. Paul Dixon, one of my playing partners today had been having a very mixed round up to this point but there was no denying the deft chip from off the green which found the middle of the hole while his playing partners looked on in awe. A healthy pot of £1.50 was shared between them – well done. Considering the numbers playing (more tee times had to be negotiated with the pro shop for the Phoenix players) we were all finished and winding up well before 2.30pm. It is very gratifying to see that our pace of play has improved considerably over this season. All the latest results can be seen below:
