In this week’s newsletter there is Club Championship success for a club favourite, another superstar gets overlooked and Pro-Am entries approaching.
Enjoy the read. |
A word from the pro… We had our Club Championships last weekend and we couldn’t have had a worthier winner then Peter Thomas. Peter is the nice guy of Cottesmore. He is a polite, well mannered and extremely hard working individual. And at only 17 years old this could well be the first of many. With scores of 76-73 (149) in some pretty tough conditions he beat the nearest competitor (Jake Peate) by 6 strokes (155) while Scott Hastie made up the top 3 with scores of 80-76 (156). This is the least Peter deserves as his hard work and determination to improve his golf is unparalleled. The improvement we have seen from him over the last 18 months or so has been exceptional. Well done Peter. Well-deserved!

Hall-mark victory...
Apologies for overlooking what a great win Georgia Hall had at the Ricoh Women’s British Open. Georgia Hall won her first major title with a two-shot victory at the Women's British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
The 22-year-old is only the third British winner since the event became a major championship in 2001. Trailing Pornanong Phatlum by a shot overnight, Hall moved clear of the Thai with two holes remaining and held her nerve to secure victory, finishing on 17 under, having picked up five shots on the final day.

Are you prepared?
It looks like the hot summer we loved a few weeks ago has now been and gone. The weather is cooling down and the skies are opening more frequently.
The question is: do you have the right clothing for this weather? We have a plethora of waterproofs and ¼ zips to make sure you are prepared on the course for the harshest of conditions.
And many are even in the sale. Even better, right?

Another club run event is fast approaching...
The rescheduled Anniversary Scramble will be held on 9th September. It's a mixed event, with a random draw for your four-person scramble team. The competition is run by the club and is used to help raise funds for our junior's section - clearly this is working well considering the continuing success of our juniors. The section relies on donations each year as there is annual expenditure that cannot be covered by just the entry fees for the Junior competitions. These costs include County competition entries - Covey Cup (Cottesmore are current holders), Andy Beer Memorial and Parsons Trophy. In addition, as per our other sections there is the end of season trophy engravings and occasional trophy maintenance plus match expenses. The section requires an annual pot of around £800. Last year we held a raffle at the event and we would like to do so again. We would be very grateful for your prize donations on the day and importantly, your ticket purchases. Our Junior Section is growing in strength and the Academy is feeding new members in on a regular basis. They help to shape the future of our club and we hope you can show them your support. You can book in to this on-line or via the PSI which is now situated by the cash desk in the Pro-Shop. The Bank Holiday Fourball is on Monday 27th August. This is a pairs event, four ball better ball stableford. Entries will stay open until this Sunday evening. Again, please book in on the website, or via the PSI in the Pro-Shop. If anyone is wanting to play and looking for a partner, please just drop me an e-mail and I will try and get you paired up.

The weather gods continue to smile upon us. The recent rain has returned the course to its proper colour and the warm weather is ensuring good growth.

Team news Birchwood:
Slight error in the last newsletter. Don't worry, Cottesmore are still through, but the final is being played on 8th September. We now know this will be held at East Sussex National on the East course. This is a big day for the club. Support on the day will be much appreciated. 'B' Team:
The Bees are away at The Dyke this weekend. Good luck guys, we really need the win! |
Club Championships! As a captain, there are a few things you want for your year; good weather, no major dramas, an enjoyable captain's day, and a successful club championship. Jury's out on the weather, it's been a bit extreme at both ends of the spectrum. I think it's safe to say we have had a bit of a drama, but after this weekend I'm happy to be able to put a big green tick against the club championship. Day one saw our biggest field of the year. Despite a few no-shows, 90+ players teed off, split between the 1st and 10th tees. We've not had a two-tee start for day one before, but it allowed us to get everyone out, back in, and a preliminary draw out for day two by 15:30. As one of the first players out off the 10th and scoring a little under handicap, I took an early clubhouse lead for the net. With visions of 2016 in my mind, I settled down to watch the scores come in. My hopes for a potential second net win were largely dashed when Ross Davies came in with a net 63 (gross 76)! Ross' score managed to put him right up there with the scratch leaders for day two, and the final six was completed by Josh Greig (78), Peter Thomas (76), Josh Dance (76), Alex Wilson (75), and Ian Buchanan (74). For a change, the adults held the advantage. The weather was looking pretty bad for Sunday, so much so we were investigating tee times to play round two the following Saturday. As time went on the weather started to look more acceptable, but still wet. Fortunately, the rain held off. Commander Dowzer was present on the first tee to officiate and see the leaders out. Day two for me was all about just enjoying the day with Will Human and Trevor Pigram with Lucy in tow. I can't go without commenting on what a good round Trevor had; well, all except the 5th where he put three balls in to the water from no more than 70 yards out... it was all smiles though. By the time we were back in, I'd managed a grindy net 73 and perhaps still in with a chance. I'd have a bit of a wait for Ross to finish in the last group to find out. Eventually we had all the scores in, and Donald went about the business of getting the results together. Then on with the presentations, which were kicked off by Johnny Porter welcoming everyone to our new clubhouse. The twos pot was well shared, with 17 twos scored over the weekend. Picking up £25 each were Rob Pistone, Darren Dance, Ross Davies, Josh Greig, Dave Ormerod, Paul Young (yes, really), Donald Day, Owen Brace, Paul Budgen, Simon Cripps, Andy Lambert, Dean Smith, Richard York, Martin Cook and Steve Grouwstra who all scored a two over the 36 holes. That only leaves Isaac Peate who was a bit greedy and scored two twos over the weekend! As it's a two day event, the committee award 1st and 2nd place to the best net scores for each individual day to those not in the overall places for the weekend. Close-but-no-cigar on Saturday were Ian Buchanan (68) and Mike Frei (69), and on Sunday Dean Smith (69) and Paul Taylor (69). Well done lads, always nice to be amongst those getting a reduction at a major. The runners-up over the weekend, stringing two good medal rounds together:
3rd Place Net - Paul Young (140) 3rd Place Gross - Scott Hastie (140) 2nd Place Net - Scott Hastie (156) 2nd Place Gross - Jack Peate (155) A special mention to our Club Pro and Director of Golf, Steve Grouwstra who shot 150 but wasn't eligible for the places - well done Steve, let's keep it going for East Brighton next month! |
Clearly Ross Davies did manage to keep it all together on day two and carded a fantastic 135 net for the two rounds to win the Net Club Championship. Well played Ross, great golf.
Shooting an incredible one over gross on day two, with a total score of 149 for the weekend... 2018 Club Champion, and receiving a rapturous round of applause, was Peter Thomas. Everyone is well aware of how much work Peter puts in to his golf and this is a well deserved and popular win for one of our club's juniors. Congratulations to you Peter! |

It's great being Captain at such a big competition at the club and people are always coming up and thanking me, but its success is really down to people other than me. The list is quite extensive; - Donald Day who does such a lot of work, a real Handicap Master - Andy Peate for registration on Saturday and Sunday - Grant Moyse for registration on Saturday - Club President Paddy Dowzer for his sartorial elegance - Nigel Hartwright for his continued camping out on the 4th hole - Malcolm Holmes, Trevor Pigram, Tony Cockerill for their assistance in the planning - Martin Bolton-Smith, a solid VC and Trophy Master - Johnny Porter & Matthew Rogerson for providing us such a great golf club - Ben Clements & Steve Grouwstra and the rest of the team for a top rate golf course - All the F&B team keeping us fed and watered over the weekend If you see any of the above around the club, please be sure thank them. They do such a great job for us all. Lastly, thanks to you all for entering and supporting *the* major of the year. It's been a real highlight for me.

The latest ladies' news...
Sadly, Lady Captain’s Day 9/8 was another washout, although it was great fun in our new clubhouse, with a great turnout. Thank you all for my lovely flowers, gift and cards. Division 3 semi finals also had terrible weather and will now be at Littlehampton golf club on 17/8 good luck ladies. Captains Vice-Captains Challenge played at Cranleigh was great fun on Monday, unfortunately the vice captains team won. All to play for in the next round. Hazel Knight Challenge, and more rain! The competition was reduced, sensibly to nine holes, with Liz Baguley, myself and our ghost player Ruth Leatherbarrow winning. Please renter the Anniversary Scramble and Lady Captains day online. There are still a few spaces in the Pro Am for September the 7th. It would be great to have more ladies playing, forms are available in the pro shop. Next week the Newman Cup is played on the Griffin for both competitions. Please check the website for your tee times. Ladies invite is this Monday, and I’m looking forward to seeing all our guests. I think we have had enough rain for now!

Here, there and everywhere |
We are faced with a whole range of scenarios out on the course, some of which we practice regularly and others that we don’t. When you consider the different types of shots you hit around the greens, it really does highlight how versatile your wedges need to be. |
Versatility is key We ask a lot from our wedges, from opening up the face to hit high lob/flop shots to moving the ball back in our stance to play low flying pitches and everything in between. It’s therefore obvious that you should be playing something you’re comfortable with from any spot around the greens. If you’re yet to find that wedge, come and try the Callaway Mack Daddy 4 here in the shop. It comes in lots of lofts so we can discuss your wedge make up, plus we can test the different sole grinds to see which ones best suit the shots you like to play. |
