The greens maintenance week looks to have gone very well and the construction work on the Phoenix is well underway. In this follow up report I will mainly talk about the Phoenix work as it will be the main focus over the next few months before winter sets in.
Phoenix
The work here has been intense but good. The drainage to the new holes is in and tees construction is underway. The 2nd green is still to be completed and lots of areas around these holes are to be finished. It is very easy to panic and try to do everything at once. However, jobs would get half finished and you would pay in the long term. I feel that there are certain things that need to be done straight away and other areas such as tees that can wait for a couple of weeks. I have booked in my next visit very soon on Tuesday the 9th September which will allow me to keep an eye on the grow in. Until that day I see the follow as priority work:
2nd Phoenix Green - The first task is to complete the turfing of the drain lines. This is a priority as until it is finished we can not do any work to the green. Once the drain lines are complete, heavy dress the green by hand. The green has become unstable and we will need to heavily top dress the green a few times over the next couple of weeks.
3rd and 15th Phoenix Greens - These two greens have responded well to the aggressive renovations. This must continue if we are to have them up to scratch by next spring. There are many bare patches on these greens and they need repairing. I would also deep verti-drain the greens with a 20mm tine on a 50mm spacing and heavily top dress the greens by filling in the holes by hand.
2nd/3rd drain lines - These all need topping up. Use straight sand for the time being until they have settled completely. Apply the slow release granular fertiliser that you have in stock to these fairways, plus make sure your fairway mower cuts these areas side on. We need to minimise traffic going over the lines as it won't help recovery at all.
Old bunkers and ditches on 2 and 3 - These need to be dug out (100mm) and replaced with decent top soil. Once they have been filled in and levelled, use turf from your existing fairways to make them match the surrounds. It will minimise their standing out in the future.
Woodland area to the left of the 2nd fairway - If you get the big digger back in to do the work to your old bunkers, get him to rip through this area clearing any roots or whips. It is very rough at the moment and if you want to be able to cut it in the future it needs some work. I suggest that you smooth it out, apply a 50mm layer of top soil and then seed it with some rye grass.
In my opinion these are the priority jobs. Other areas such as the tees' construction can wait for a few weeks but we need to get on top of these areas first.
The Griffin
As usual the course was in good condition. Considering that the greens had been double spiked and had 50 tonnes of sand applied to them, they looked well. You are now in the recovery period and it will take a few weeks for them to return them back to normal. The granular fertiliser that has been applied will help and I see no need to do much else to them for the time being apart from applying a preventive fungicide application. Hopefully this can wait until Nick returns and should consist of the following:
A couple of areas look a bit out of sync and could do with some attention over the next few weeks. The paths, concrete mats and steps are weedy and a total weedkiller should be sprayed to them. The collars/approaches look long and need to be cut at least 3 times per week at the moment. If they haven't had an application of primo maxx (trinexapac-ethyl) applied recently I suggest do so at the earliest opportunity at the rate of 1L/ha.
