Welcome to this week's newsletter. This week we have work on the course, the juniors are on fire and Paul survives his gruelling challenge. Enjoy the read. |
A word from the pro… I have had the pleasure to get out on the course this week and I have to say it is in spectacular condition. The greens are improving all the time and the definition of the holes make the course look top notch. It is a credit to all the team.
Well done gang! |
You will have noticed a strange man who talks funny working on the 1st/15th ditch this past week. This is Scott Hastie, one of our members, who is helping to reconstruct the ditch.
This will make the ditch look much better and will also give you the option to play out of it if you are brave enough. Thank you, Scott for your help.
I can’t wait to see the finished article. |

The latest news...
Thursday was our Granny/non-Granny Trophy Day with Angela Whittington first, Jenny Dixon second in the Granny Trophy and Penny Gaunt with Margaret Brice second in the non-Granny. The nine hole competition was won by Sue Rogerson, well done ladies. Division one beat Piltdown at home 6-1 today and they all thought the course was lovely! Great result ladies! Some ladies are required for the Men’s invite to ladies, please let myself or Paul Young know if you would like to join in. Have a good week.

We did it! 25k around the south downs way on Saturday with Jo and my father-in-law. It was tougher than we'd imagined; the distance wasn't the issue, it was the terrain and elevation changes. Although it was wet, we were all smiles at the finish line. We would like to thank everyone that sponsored us. Donations were split between on-line and cash and we still have some more to come in, but it looks like the final tally will be over £800.
Thank you all so much.

Competition results Last weekend we played the belated Easter Handicap. There are two divisions in this medal competition; Division 1 for handicaps 18 and under, and Division 2 for 19 to 28. The competitors were treated to warm weather, a great course in fine condition, and the return of ball-spotter extraordinaire, Nigel Hartwright, on the 4th. |
In Division 1 runners up were Fred Davis in third with a net score of 71 and Josh Dancein second with a net 70. Winning by two shots was Will Human with a net 68. 'The Machine' was very kind to Will and gave him a whole two-shot cut to his handicap for exceptional scoring! In Division 2 our runners up were Paul Budgen in third with a net 74 and Luke Maidment in second place with a net 73. Bigging up the juniors and three shots clear of the rest, winning his first 'proper big-boys' competition was Isaac Peate. Well done Isaac, I'm sure it's the first of many! |

Congratulations are also due to Jake Peate for his hole-in-one on the 17th. I'd also like to thank everyone that contributed to the raffle which raised around £200 for my charity. This weekend we had our first major of the year, the Spring Meeting. A 36 hole medal played over two days with a trophy each for handicap and scratch. I was absent on day one as I was over at Goodwood doing the charity walk. No bother, the committee had everything covered and they were also helped out by Margaret Brice at registration - thanks Margaret! I was back on Sunday morning to see everyone who decided to come back for another 18 holes of medal. The juniors had done well (again) on Saturday; the last group (overnight leaders) were Peter Thomas, Josh Greig, and Josh Dance. |
Before we get on to the final results, I just want to thank everyone for the speed of play on Sunday. Medal is notoriously slow, but near enough every group got round in four hours, or finished 8-10 minutes after the preceding group. Special mention to Mark Waddell and Steve Thomas who led the field from the 1st tee, and although they were only a two-ball, they got through their 18 holes in under three hours.
Handing out the prizes at the presentation felt like Groundhog Day; I'm not sure we've had this happen before! |
|
Handicap:
1st Peter Thomas (138) 2nd Mark Waddell (139) 3rd Josh Dance (141)
|
Scratch:
1st Peter Thomas (150) 2nd Mark Waddell (151) 3rd Josh Dance (151)

The results over the last two weeks really are testament to our junior section. It's great to see them come up and not only compete in, but win the men's events. I have to say a massive thanks to the committee for this weekend; Andy Peate, Donald Day, Malcolm Holmes, and Trevor Pigram. Also to Nigel Hartwright for keeping the field moving through the 4th. Last but not least, and underlining that I made a great choice for my Vice-Captain, Martin Bolton-Smith. Unfortunately, we were missing Paddy this weekend who is a little under the weather. I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing him a speedy recovery.

Dates for your diary The Lombard Pro-Am is on Saturday 26th May. I appreciate it's a busy weekend with Crown League on Sunday and Bogey Cup on Bank Holiday Monday. However, entries for the Lombard are low at the moment. It's a really good competition to enter; the winner goes with Steve G to compete at Walton Heath in a regional qualifier and the grand final is being held at Pestana Golf Resort in Portugal. For a £5 entry fee the potential returns are quite impressive. |
If you would like to enter, just click the button below to e-mail me. Although there's not quite the same level of prizes on offer, there is the Par 3 Challenge on Friday 25th May.
This is a fun event played on the Phoenix, but each hole is setup as a par 3 of 150 yards or less. Tee times will be from 5pm on the day. Entries for this are open on the PSI. |
