The tail of 'Hurricane Bertha' saw Cottesmore under water for the 2nd Day of the Club Championships.
Despite valiant efforts to get the 2nd round completed the weather finally won the day and the winners of the Club Championship was therefore decided upon based upon the scores from the first eighteen holes of the competition.
Dan Smythe won the scratch division scoring a gross 76. Sam Passmore was second and Trevor Pigram finished third. Some excellent golf played by all three.
In the handicap division, the winner was Damian Radmall with a magnificent net 62. Damian has been promising to deliver a low score for some time now and it was pleasing to see him deliver on the big stage. A large handicap-cut should now be coming his way! Trevor Pigram was second and Darren Dance was third. Well done to all those involved and a big thank you the green-keepers and all the helpers on the day. Much appreciated!
The draws for the Challis Tankard (Foursomes - Stapleford) and the Bank Holiday Four Ball (4-Ball Better-ball) have now been made and are on the noticeboard in the Gatwick Bar so please look out for your tee times.

A cool morning, compared to recent weather, welcomed us today. There were sunny periods with the slight threat of some rain showers, which fortunately did not materialise. I thought the car park was quite quiet when I arrived this morning and thought that the number playing today would be fairly low. I was very surprised to discover that 42 played in the scramble.
The Charity Pro-am is being held on Friday 12th September and there is a need for help with tasks such as ball spotting or helping with parking.
If you can spare 1 1/2 to 2 hours, your help will be most appreciated. There are sign up sheets on noticeboards in the Gatwick Bar and the Men's locker room. Please speak to Paddy if you have any questions.
Trevor James led the team in the home match against Banstead last Wednesday, and continued our unbeaten home run with another victory. The result being 5 - 3 in our favour, but we lost on aggregate over the home and away matches by 81/2 to 71/2. Thanks to all those that played.
This Friday, we are playing away at Chipstead and are home to Mid Sussex on Wednesday 20th. Alex Henderson will be captain for the day in my absence as I will be playing the Mid Sussex Mixed Open on the same day.
Sign up sheets are on the board for the home matches against Cranleigh (Wednesday 27th August) and Wildwood (Monday 8th September), and the final away match at Addington Court on Wednesday 24th September.
A Texas Scramble was held today as the hollow tining and treatment of the greens was underway. The first 5 greens were done yesterday and were quite playable, so much so that Keith Cook scored an ace on the 2nd. Many congratulations to him. The next three holes had temporary greens, tining was underway on holes 9 and 10 so these had to be 'skipped' but the remainder of the course was as good as it has been recently.
Some good results were made considering the first few sandy greens followed by the 3 temps. Honourable mentions got to the two trios of: Alex Henderson, John Hutchence and Mike Osborne with a net 62.2 and Eddie Bowles, Bob Imrie and yours truly with 61.3.
A nett 61.2 gave Keith Cook, Graham Procter and Chris Adamson the third place, with Mick Brown, Terry Knight and John Taylor in second place with 60.9.
The winners of the £10 pro shop vouchers were Peter Allanson, new boy Alex Morrison and Mick Bell on 60.3. Congratulations to all.
Card duty was done by Cyril Strudwick and Peter Swann with Graham Sinclair follwing up with clubhouse duty. Next week is the 5th (medal) round of the Peter Morley/Harry Bacon trophies.

August Medal
Congratulations to Linda (I never win anything!) Atkins, who won the silver division with a net 70 and got cut to 15.2 as a result! Also to Kate Corbett who won the bronze division with a net 73 - well done to both ladies.
Due to the awful weather on Sunday, when the competition had to be abandoned before it even started, the club championship was decided on Saturday's results alone. Many congratulations to Penny Gaunt, who retained her Club Champion title, with a gross score of 79 over Iona McKean, who was runner-up with 83. Our net champion was Brenda Williams, with a score of 71, over Linda Atkins on countback from Jenny Frei with 74.
Well done to all participants, especially the winners - it is a tough competition and it was just disappointing that this year, those in close contention did not get the opportunity to improve their position in a second round.
Thanks to Meg Mitchell for her organisation, especially the very smart scoreboard she came up with - give me pen and paper over technology every time!
Granny & non-granny trophy competition
The draw for this competition is posted on the noticeboard in the changing room and I have fingers crossed that Hurricane Bertha has blown herself out and we get back to better weather on Thursday.
