2014 Order of Merit current standings
Well done to Josh Greig and Richie Bailey on scoring an impressive 46 points playing greensomes in the afternoon of Captain's Day and winning best score for the afternoon.
Commiserations to the talented Ryan Reagan who, if he could just learn to fill cards in properly, could have so much more success. On Captain's day, he and his partner John Hamblett scored 39 pts and 45 pts for an 84 total but a messy card gave them an NR in the morning. The winning total for the day was 83 points. Come on Ryan!!!
Neither Sam Smitherman or Alex faired well at last weeks Golf College Challenge, however I am sure that Sam and Steve will be motivated next week when they play in the PGA Championship of Sussex on Wednesday 2nd. Not only do they have the chance of beating Calum over 36 holes but also General Manager Matthew Hazelden. The event is over the 2 courses at Royal Ashdown and will test every part of their games.
For the record Matthew Hazelden only just missed out in getting through the regional qualifying for The Open Championship at East Sussex last Monday scoring 74 with a very costly double bogey on the 18th.

CAPTAIN'S DAY - WOW! A course that was bathed in glorious sunshine and in magnificent condition combined with excellent catering and free beer made Captain's day 2014 one to remember and one that was greatly appreciated by those who took part. A big thanks go to everybody who helped make the day so enjoyable - the greenkeepers for their hard work in preparing the course; the ladies who provided magnificent home made cakes and biscuits; the Sussex Hog Roast Catering Company and Marquees 4Hire who both provided excellent service and of course the helpers on the day.
A special mention goes to Elaine Jones, Jenny Frei , Heather Skinner and Lynne Peate for manning the marquee including running the raffle and sweep stake, doing the cards and overseeing the refreshments and Sarah Cockerill and Amanda Whiffin for their sterling work on the 8th. Not forgetting of course, young Isaac Peate who picked up the award for "helper of the day" for his hard work in ferrying ice and beer - and his little sister Amelia who patiently stuck raffle tickets on all the raffle prizes.
As to the competition itself, the morning 4BBB was won by Grant Moyse and Steve Walsh who scored 43 points, only to be eclipsed in the afternoon by Juniors Richard Bailey and Josh Greig who clocked up a wonderful 46 points in the greensomes competition. The overall winner with a combined score of 83 was Ed Whiffin and Mike Frei who narrowly beat Nick Knight and Nigel Powell who scored 82 points.
Altogether over £900 was raised for Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. So a big thank you to all those who contributed.

Peter Betteridge Greensomes Trophy - Good scores were had by those at the top, and a lot of counting back had to be done to determine the honorable mentions and the top three places.
Honorable mentions to the pairing of Phil Hodson & John Hutchence with 41 points narrowly beaten by the Andy McClean/Doug Bennett combo on countback. All the places went to the three pairs with 42 points only split by the narrowest of margins on count back. Third place went to Ron Vance & Barry Keating (oh how the blob on the 15th must hurt!!), with Noel Hallam and Peter Lamb in second. The winners of the Peter Betteridge Trophy for 2014 were Geoff Chalfont and Peter Allanson (second trophy win this year). I hope they have settled who will hold it for the second 6 months and has to polish for the 2015 event.

Commiserations to our division teams as last week they all lost their matches: Div. 3 losing 5.5-1.5 at home to Goodwood on Monday; Div. 2 losing 5-2 away at Haywards Heath on Thursday and Div. 1 losing 4-3 at home to West Sussex on Friday.
A huge 'thank you' to the division captains - Penny, Jenny and Margaret for their organisation of the matches and to all the ladies who made up those division teams. I think all the teams came up against some strong opposition this year and I know from experience that there were some very close games which could have gone either way. Division matches are most enjoyable to play in, so any of you who haven't played in them before, why not think about it for next season!
