What to drink when working out if you are trying to lose weight?
Water is usually the most popular choice. However is it the best? We don't particularly want to add calories when you are looking at losing weight, however, one could argue that using an isotonic sports drink could improve calorie expenditure in the gym!
What I recommend is adding salt to your water during your workout. Basic Sodium Chloride could help get the most out of your gym session (e.g running farther and burning more calories). Adding just a pinch of salt could help cells take in more water, increase thirst and improve hydration better than water alone!
TIP: Please don't use ordinary table salt, but unprocessed sea salt would be a better option. And if you already have a high salt diet, you might not want to additional salt to your diet and water.

Tight tree lined fairways and small greens and you would think that the Cottesmore Professionals would be in their element. Sadly not as it was another missed cut at The Drift Golf Club for Calum, Steve and Sam while playing in the Southern Open at the start of the week. Conditions were perfect, but sadly the golf was far from. June will be spent practicing, getting ready for a better July.
Players are often confused as to what damage they can repair on the putting green. Let's try and clarify this:
Rule 16-1c states;
The player may repair an old hole plug or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball, whether or not the player's ball lies on the putting green. This is the only damage that a player may repair on the putting green without incurring a penalty and note that the player's ball does not have to be on the green for the player to repair the damage.
…….and while we are on the subject; do you know the correct way to repair a pitch mark? It amazes me how often I see single figure golfers and even some professionals 'repairing' pitch marks incorrectly.
A pitch mark should be repaired as follows:
- Commence at the back of the pitch mark and push forward with a pitch mark repairer.
- Attend to each side of the pitch mark, easing the turf towards the centre.
- NEVER lift the pitch mark fork or tee upward bringing soil to the surface.
- NEVER twist the fork within the ground.
- DO NOT replace any turf that came out with the pitch
- Complete the repair by tapping down with a putter.

Last Wednesday, in warm, dry conditions, we played Sweetwoods away. It was an excellent day as the first four matches were all won by us, which meant that we could not lose. I am very delighted to say that, probably unexpectedly, we won 5.5 to 2.5. Our first away win of the year but hopefully not the last. I think that the speed of the greens at Cottesmore helped a great deal because those at Sweetwoods are usually lightning fast.
