Tip of the week

Our top tips for preparing for the season ahead

Although the weather only seems to be getting worse recently, soon the temperatures will start to rise and the sun will show its face again (we hope). That means it's time to dust the clubs off and start preparing for the season ahead. Here are our top tips on how to get off to a flying start this season:

  • Warm up (especially when it's cold) - It may not be the most exciting tip, but it is vital to starting a round quickly and not injuring yourself. There are plenty of golf warm up routines available online, alternatively we'd recommend going in the net for 5 minutes, using a wedge, and starting with very slow and controlled 3/4 or even 1/2 swings and slowly working your way up to a full swing at full speed.
  • A little can add up to a lot - If you're still not quite keen on having long practice sessions, then have short practice sessions as often as possible. Even if it's just 5 minutes putting or chipping at home every other day, or 5 minutes swinging a club and getting a feel for a proper release of the face, body rotation, and timing. You'd be surprised how much of a difference this can make come your first competition back.
  • Get fitted - If you've never been custom fitted and your clubs are getting on in age, then now is the perfect time to upgrade. You have the whole of this season to enjoy your brand new clubs and all the manufacturers have just bought out their latest products. If you haven't been custom fit before, then you will almost certainly gain yardage or accuracy, if not both.
  • Get some tune-up lessons - There are a fair few people who never have lessons, they enjoy playing a round with their friends, or in a comp, and whether or not they improve isn't the most important thing; however, there is no harm in getting one or two tune-up lessons before the season begins, in order to get you back to your peak and ready to enjoy golf more than ever. Think of it as a warm of up for the season, that should hopefully keep you going until winter kicks in again.

Thought of the week

How did you enjoy the weekend's golf?

Some truly special stuff was played on both sides of the pond over the weekend. Graeme Storm's remarkable story continued on the European Tour. The Englishman kept his Tour card for this year by the skin of his teeth, only to go and defeat Rory McIlroy after a three-hole playoff in his first event of 2017. Over in Hawaii, Justin Thomas followed up last week's triumph by carding an opening round 59 en route to a second successive victory, smashing various records in the process.
