Greetings golfers,
Last newsletter of the year and if any of you are looking for that last Minute Christmas Shopping - no better place than your Golf Shop - opening hours 7.30am - 3.30pm, Steve, Sam and Calum, as always, will all be happy to assist.
It was with tremendous pride and honour that I took over the Captaincy on Sunday 4th December following the Turkey Trot.
I took the baton following a wonderful 12 months from our Immediate Past-Captain, Barry Peate. Barry was very popular with all and did an incredible job, having chosen to accept the role at the last-minute when the scheduled 2016 Captain stood down. As I said on Sunday, he will be a hard act to follow.
Thank you Barry for a fun year and I very much enjoyed being your VC.
It is my intention to produce a regular newsletter with specific news and articles relevant to the Men's Section but will also include items about other sections if I think it may be of interest to some or all.
We had 17 teams competing in the Turkey Trot. It was a cold morning, the greens were frozen solid but as it was Barry's last one of the year, the weather stayed dry and the sun tried it's best to shine.
Turkeys were presented to the top seven teams.
In 3rd place were the team comprising Steve Grouwstra partnered by Richard Copeland (they were practising for the Cross-Country from what I saw), Graham Snelgrove partnered by Craig Millyard and Tom Aye-Moung partnered by Ben Johnson.
In 2nd place were "Bargain Hunter" Grant Moyse partnered by Giles Faulkner, Nick Dawson partnered by Sam Boylett and Steve Brice partnered by Stephen White.
Winners for the second year running (!!) were Mick Stacey partnered by yours truly, Terry (who else) partnered by Donald Day (about to face the handicap review) and Nigel Powell and Nick Knight.
The good news for all, was that Mick's acceptance speech naturally ended with the now 'traditional' song. Well done Mick and of course, who could forget Paddy being roped in to the singing too!!!
The final act of the day was to present the last remaining trophies. The honours went to;
Order of Merit (Scratch) - Jake Peate
Order of Merit (Handicap) - Greg Lewis
Scratch KO - Mark Waddell
Buchan Cup - Terry Vanhinsbergh
Cottesmore Cup - Darren and Josh Dance
Mixed KO - Terry Vanhinsbergh and Pauline Kirkman

The Winter Foursomes Knockout Final was played last week and congratulations go to Christine Knight & Linda Atkins who beat Heather Skinner & Jill Lewis on 17th hole. Christine and Linda will go forward to represent the Club in the Daily Mail Foursomes 2017.
Last Thursday it was the Turkey Trot and some 45 ladies played a Texas Scramble - 18 holes on the Griffin or 9 holes on the Phoenix. Congratulations to the winners : Pat Johns, Prue Harding and Naomi Zoob for 18 holes and Anne Anderson, Peggy Davies and Sue Ford for 9 holes; it is a fun day and everyone receives a prize, including a gift for the non-playing ladies. The organiser Margaret Swatman did a superb job providing 50+ gifts! The golf was followed by a Turkey dinner and a cello performance by Naomi Zoob.
Well done to Will Pirie who surprised everyone in winning the rescheduled Junior Academy Autumn Masters last weekend.
Will finished on the 9th green in his 36th shot, finishing ahead of Ben Powell and 2016 Order of Merit winner Joseph Byrne, who was exceptionally unlucky in losing a ball by the side of 6th green where it wanted to hide under leaves, costing him 2 strokes.
Winners were:
Autumn Master: William Pirie
Under 13s: William Pirie
Under 11s: Joseph Byrne
Under 9s: Leo Cahi
Under 7s: Freddie Hopkins
