General Manager's Message
Dear Members
It certainly feels like the golf season is well and truly underway. Conditions on and off the course have been favorable and have allowed us to build strong momentum into the season.
I would like to thank many of you who have taken the trouble to give us some very positive feedback on course conditioning recently, it really helps to keep us all motivated as we embark on continual small incremental improvements.
Green speeds have been hovering around 10 on the stimp meter on the Griffin and that is where we want them to stay. We do not want lightening fast greens which are too tough and slow the pace of play down, we want surfaces that are true, medium fast and that receive a well struck shot from the fairway. We acknowledge we are not entirely there yet and that this is different from years gone by and maybe a challenge for some of you, but I am confident you will get used to the changes and in time prefer what we are delivering. We are absolutely sure this is what we need to provide in a competitive marketplace to attract new golfers to the Club.
Although we love the course, its nuances and its challenges, it's beauty, we do have to produce a course that more other people love as well! Cottesmore's very small firm greens, tight fairways, and a course with a SSS under par has not always been a course that has filled visitors with optimism upon their arrival or indeed left them with the desire to return anytime soon after the course has beaten them up all hands down.
Our challenge is to change that reputation to being a beautiful golf course, consistently in superb condition which is fun, interesting, challenging, fair and rewarding. We have started that process of change and from the positive feedback we are getting we know we're on the right track. There are green shoots and we know that the course is improving all the time, some are supporting us now for others it will take some more convincing over a longer period.
We are very confident we will deliver these changes, please watch with excitement and interest and enjoy the journey.

At last some goods news from the Pro Shop staff as last Thursday at The Lambourne Club, Calum qualified for the 2014 Glenmuir Club Professionals Championship.
This is the main event for Club Professionals across the UK and the final this year is held at Blairgowrie Golf Club, Perthshire, Scotland in August. There were 19 spots available from the South Region qualifier where 111 players teed up. Calum teed off at 9.40am and walked off the 18th green at 4.30pm, nearly seven hours later, after storm delays throughout the round. He then had to wait another 4 hours to see if his 2 over par 74 was good enough.
As it was there were 20 people on 74 or better and thus had to treck down the 9th hole to tee off again at 9pm to play in a sudden death play off where 5 players battled it out for the 4 available spots. A 2 putt par was sufficient to make it the third time in the last four years that Calum has qualified for this premier event. He will be looking to fair a little better than last year at Slaley Hall, where after leading the field for the bulk of his opening round finished with two triple bogeys in the last 4 holes and eventually missed the cut by 2.
Next Week Calum, Steve and Sam all tee up in the Southern Open at the Drift Golf Club. Hopefully all will put in a good show round this tricky course.

A very soggy bank holiday Monday saw young Josh Grieg triumph in the Centenary Jug with a nett 66 narrowly beating Dan Smythe who shot a gross 69. Dan also scooped nearly £70 for getting a two, with Andy Peate and Mike Swatman also successful. Nearest the pin in two on the 16th was won by Donald Day.
Also in the money was Vice-Captain Harry Reed but not for his golfing performance! He picked up £75 for winning the two hundred club and Terry Vanhinsbergh scooped the £25 prize. One Hundred pounds went to Rainbow Trust, the Captain's charity, so thank you to everyone who purchased squares and better luck next time.
