Course news

June is here and at last we are no longer with preferred lies. GUR is marked up throughout the course and the main thing to remember is that relief is not mandatory from GUR. The local rules have been updated to accommodate the tree work that has been done to the right of the 4th and 8th holes, but in essence, if you are in those areas you will be entitled to a preferred lie before chipping out.

Golf club news

Last week was the Lady Captain's Charity Day Team Stableford (best 2 scores count). On Thursday, the 18-hole winners were Viv Lyons, Sue Woods and Margaret Swatman with a magnificent 83 points. Our best team score on Sunday was 82 points and it was good to see junior girls Salysa and Lucy joining in and they both had good individual scores - better than can be said for the adults. Thank you to everyone who supported the charity over these two days which raised a magnificent total of just over £300.

It's been a great week for Cottesmore's teams. On Wednesday, Division Three beat Singing Hills 6-1 at home. On Saturday, Division One beat Piltdown 6-1 at home. And on Sunday, the Mail on Sunday team of Jenny Frei, Irene Matheson, Linda Adamson, Christine Knight and Jill Lewis played their 5th round match vs Cuckfield and had a resounding 5-0 win. Great performances all round - well done, everyone.

The ladies were faced with cold and windy conditions on Bank Holiday Monday in the club qualifier for the PING 4BBB national competition. There were some magnificent scores. In first place was Jenny Frei and Irene Matheson with 46 points, beating Naomi Zoob and Valerie Keating on a back nine countback. We shall wait and see if 46 points is enough to get Jenny and Irene to the final at Gainsborough GC in Lincolnshire come September.

Also on Monday, David Lilburn, Chairman of Trustees for Help Our Wounded Royal Marines, came to the club and was presented with a cheque for £1325 by Margaret Brice raised from her 10k challenge for the Lady Captain's Charity.

Congratulations to Alan Greig who scored an exceptional 45 points in the National Golf Club Challenge on Bank Holiday Monday. Played on the Phoenix Course for the first time, Alan out-shone the rest of the field and only just pipped his in-form son who scored a tremendous 44 points. Cottesmore Junior Elite Team and Sussex under 14s player Josh Greig reduced his handicap to 10 from his recent consistent play.

Junior news

On Tuesday it was the SCLGA Junior County Championships - a 36-hole medal competition at Haywards Heath Golf Club. The weather was awful and there was a two-hour rain delay in the morning. Salysa Mason shot a nett 71 in the morning and a nett 69 in the afternoon for a total of 140 - five shots ahead of the runner-up. Salysa is now SCLGA Junior Handicap Champion 2016. This fantastic result has reduced Salysa's handicap to 10.6, who is part of the successful Cottesmore Junior Elite Team who have defeated Bognor Regis and defending Champions Chartham Park en-route to the semi-finals of the Sussex Covey Cup.

Well done to Freddie Hopkins, Jessie Spurrier and her dad Karl for winning the May half-term Junior Adult Scramble. This is the third scramble win in a row for 4-year-old Freddie and winning with a different team each time. This cannot be a coincidence, and just maybe Freddie is the next superstar to come from Cottesmore's Junior Academy. Watch this space.

Tour news

Well I guess it is what we have all been waiting for. This week's PGA Tour event, the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, has Spieth, McIlroy and Jason Day in the field and more importantly all three of them have won in their last tournament outing. Just two weeks before the US Open, this will be a fantastic contest, all in-form and at a great venue. We will all have a favourite - Rory closed out the Irish Open superbly, Spieth rocked the field last week with a 5-under back nine and Day led from start to finish in the Players Championship. If we went on consistent form then Day should take this one, however Spieth just seems to have a knack of scoring when not even playing well. And Rory? Well, when he is confident there are those that say he is unbeatable. Let's just sit back, watch and enjoy.
