General manager

A major ambition for 2016 is to improve our entrance driveway and the first impression that delivers for members and visitors alike. So far you may have noticed the tree work by the 8th green on the way in to improve the view which we will continue to tidy up and make more presentable. Quotes are currently being received to resurface the driveway from top to bottom which will also include some enlarging of the passing places. A new driveway lighting system will also be installed at the same time. Another aspect that catches the eye on the way in, and forms part of the arrival experience, is the condition of the tennis courts. A contractor has been booked to recondition the courts and repaint them. Naturally these works can only commence once weather conditions improve and temperatures rise. We will aim to keep disruption to a minimum, however, the driveway will require closing for a day or two. Once a timescale has been agreed we will give plenty of warning and arrange for alternative access to the Club through another entrance.

Golf club news

Well done to our ladies Mail on Sunday team - Heather Skinner, Penny Gaunt, Iona McKean, Jenny Frei and Jill Lewis - who convincingly won their first round match against Mannings Heath last week. The ladies have drawn Cuddington at home in the second round - an interesting 'out of area' draw for them, however I am sure the home advantage will prove enough for our ladies. Good luck, girls.

Pros news

It is once more time for our biennial match of the Celts (and their friends) challenging their Auld enemy, all in the good cause of Sport Relief. This year the match is on Monday, 7 March and it is hoped that many of you will play. Whether there are two pairs or 20 pairs the match will go ahead and if my memory serves me right, the Celts won in 2012 but lost in 2014. Entries can be received by email to directorofgolf@cottesmoregolf.co.uk or by putting your name up on the list in the Gatwick Room.

Junior academy

Half-term week has really shown who the die-hards are within the Academy. Despite the freezing conditions it has been great to see so many of you up playing, practicing and taking part in the half-term coaching. Two new juniors have joined us with 12-year-old Salysa Mason being the highlight, playing off 14 and with a swing that can only be admired. It will be great to see Salysa head up our Girls Team (we had 9 girls out playing on Tuesday) and to see how she competes against our regular top girls of Penny, Iona and Pat.

Tour news

The Northern Trust Open will be the highlight this weekend with Jordan Spieth and Rory once again heading up the field. No Rickie or Jason Day at Riviera where scoring can be very tough. This course averages at less than 10 greens hit in regulation per round and has more missed three foot putts than any other course on the PGA Tour and by some way. With Charl Schwartzel winning last week and Sergio's quality iron play, I hope to see them take advantage of their skills.

We hope you enjoy the rest of the newsletter and have a great week.
