Lady Captain's Final Words
Unfortunately there is no golf to report on again this week as the snow arrived. However, as this will be my final newsletter as Lady Captain, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my committee for all of their hard work over the year and for their total support. I should also like to thank the Management, catering, office staff and the greenkeepers for being so helpful to me over the year and for doing everything possible to make things as good as they could be for the ladies in their competitions and events. Thank you!
A final "thank you" must go to all of the ladies in the section for making me a very happy captain during the year and for giving me so many happy memories. Your participation in all events this year has been outstanding! You are all a great bunch of people to be with and it has been a real privilege to be your captain. Very best of luck to Ruth and her committee for the forthcoming year. I'm sure we will have another great year to look forward to.

We may not be getting a lot of golf played with the recent weather but this week hosts the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, the tournament that Rory says starts his 2016 campaign to regain the number one spot in the world. It is fitting then that the current world number one, Jordan Spieth, is in the field and the media are all over it. The comparisons between the two players are everywhere you look.
This really could build into something that it is not. Who is the best? Jordan has just come off a tremendous win and his game is already sharp, albeit on a course he loves and on a grass type that suited him. He now travels halfway round the world to a course he does not know and a different grass type. While Rory loves the course on which he is nearly always in contention, however it will be his first competitive start for a couple of months and there may just be a little rustiness in there. So no matter the outcome, who is the best will not be decided this weekend but it will be fantastic to watch.
This may be Round 1, even if Jason Day is missing. A lot has been mentioned reference 'the big three' in the last six months and the next few months will let us know if this is to continue and whether a fourth will join in. Step up Rickie Fowler, who will need to win a major this year if he is to burst the triumvirate's bubble. The 'big three' have won five of the last six majors and 2016 is going to be a great spectacle - and that is the point - irrespective of this weekend's outcome, it will be at the end of the year that we can reflect and see who is what in the world of golf.
It is not a sprint, golf is about putting in the work and through time, gaining the results. There is no better example of this than Jason Day. Too often I see members practicing the evening before a competition, having not stepped onto the practice range during the previous months. If time is a restraint, then speak to Calum, have a lesson and he could easily give you a 15-minute drill that you can do as little as once a week and through time it can make a significant difference to your scores.
As we talk about putting in the work, congratulations to Egor Zotov who at 14-years-old has managed to get into the Surrey Under 18s set up. Egor joined the Cottesmore Junior Academy some seven years ago and despite moving to Woking in 2014, he still has regular lessons with Calum. He is one of the most passionate golfers and his steely determination and desire to work on his game has clearly been recognized by the Surrey Team. Last year he was one of the most valuable players in the Surrey under 14s squad and to see him make this leap forward is testament to his work ethic. Let's hope he keeps working hard.

The course re-opened last Saturday after a good few weeks being closed due to the rain, and what happens? It snows Saturday night and we are closed again! Well we have now opened again and hopefully many of you will get back out there and dust down the cobwebs. Please be mindful of wet areas and the greenkeepers' traffic control ropes. Please also keep on top of pitch repairing and replacement of divots. For the correct way to repair a pitchmark please click here.
